What Was the Last Movie You Watched?

Since I haven't been to the movies forever and I don't get Direct TV, when I do watch movies, it's usually an older movie on Roku. The last movie(s) I saw was Secondhand Lions with Robert Duvall and Michael Cane and A Family Thing with Robert Duvall and James Earl Jones. If you can't tell, Robert Duvall is one of my favorite actors.

I just watched The Secret in Their Eyes on the Roku channel website with no commercials -- I guess because of my ad blocker. I had no idea I could do that. :)

It's a decent movie. 6.3 on IMDB, which is about what I'd give it.

Just watched "Remarkably Bright Creatures" on Netflix, in part because i'm a big fan of Sally Fields and the trailer kind of hooked me. Several recognizable faces in it including Colm Meany who's best known for 2 different Star Trek series. Alfred Molina narrates. The character he voices is not human but interesting considering The villain he played in Spiderman movies.

But this is not a sci-fi movie, it is more of a sentimental family with rom-com elements fantasy that i enjoyed. And i don't usually have the patience for or give my undivided attention to movies longer than 90 minutes if there's not puzzle to unravel. i saw some of twists coming but the characters, narrator included, kept me engaged.
The book was excellent. I quite like Sally Field so will probably check out the movie tonight.

]The Dig] I think that Ralph Fiennes is one of the very best actors to come out of England, which is saying something. The man has a very wide range, and has excelled in every role I've ever seen of his.

From his chilling portrayal of the Nazi camp commandant in '93s Schindler's List, up through his brilliant portrayal of the head Cardinal in 2024's Conclave, he always treats us with a totally believable performance.

The English Patient was also very good...

I watched "¡Three Amigos!" 1986 on Tubi.

I had watched a documentary about Martin Short, so I thought I would watch some of his movies.
"Marty, Life Is Short" 2026 on look.

My son gave me his vcr/dvd player. It's great, so now I can watch all the old tapes of my boys growing up from 3 years of age.
I found the old DVD movie, Strictly Ballroom which is one of my all-time favourite movies. It's Corney but the dance sequences
behind the old shop is fantastic and the final dance sequence at the Ballroom Championship is one of the best I've seen for an Australian movie.

Yeah, he was great in The Dig with his Cockney accent. He's also performed Shakespeare on stage. He can do it all!

We watched Crime 101 last night starring Chris Hemsworth and Mark Ruffalo. It was a decent movie -- not great, but watchable.

I also watched Zodiac over the past few days, which is really good.

I too thought it was good for several reasons. It's an enjoyable noirish crime yarn which is refreshing for its originality as well its relative scarcity of violence and gutter language-- truly a rarity these days.

Writer/director Bart Layton helms a veteran cast, including Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Halle Berry, Nick Nolte, and Jennifer Jason Leigh. Also featured is multiple award winning Irish actor, Barry Keoghan.

The film’s title is catchy, but misleading. It refers to the central premise of a jewel thief Mike (Hemsworth) who targets his heists with proximity to California’s Highway 101 in order to facilitate his getaways. Mike’s handler, Money (Nolte), provides info on valuable marks. After mike barely eludes a close call during an L.A. heist, he calls off a planned theft in Santa Barbara; so Money enlists a violent nut case (Keoghan) to complete the job, and also to shadow Mike and to to hijack his next job.

Along the way the detective assigned to the case (Ruffalo) gradually identifies Mike as a suspect, but is warned off the trail by his superior. We meet a high end insurance agent (Berry) who eventually provides target information to Mike because she is frustrated by being continually passed over for promotion by her employer. Mike also begins a relationship with a lady who serendipitously bumps into Mike’s car at an intersection.

The story weaves in and out, while introducing various plot points that serve to draw together all of its elements to provide a final confrontation, followed by a satisfying ending.

The cinematography by Erik Wilson is stunning. Of the thousands of movies which have featured footage of L.A. and Hollywood, it’s remarkable that Wilson finds compelling subject views, and also films them in an attractive innovative fashion. Direction by Layton is sure footed. Despite his scant resume of feature films, he has drawn together all elements of his screenplay in a manner of a far more experienced director.

The acting is first rate. Hemsworth shows an admirable range playing a taciturn complicated thief who has a clouded past. Ruffalo turns in a deft portrayal of a world weary but intuitive detective. He is a bit of a one note samba, since he has played several similar roles. But he does it with perfection. Berry still has it in the looks department, and she is perfectly cast. And Keoghan is chilling as a violent nut job. The one weakness is Monica Barbaro who plays Mike’s love interest. She’s a decent actress but was badly miscast in her role. There is zero chemistry between her and Hemsworth.

Plaudits go to the production for it’s restraint in mimicking contemporary shoot-em-ups, violence, and gratuitous language. which have become the norm. It’s a good picture reminiscent of earlier movie styles.

Doc’s rating: 8/10

Are he and Meryl Streep still an "item"?
.
As far as I know they are just good friends, that it is just a rumur.

Meryl Streep’s husband is Don Gummer, is a renowned contemporary sculptor.
The couple married in September 1978 and have been married for over four decades,
They have four children.

I love Australian humor! Strictly Ballroom and Muriel's Wedding are two of my favorites. You're right, the dance scene to Love Is in the Air is iconic!

Muriel's Wedding is one of my absolute favorites, too. I adore Toni Collette. I watched Hereditary last night and was thinking of Muriel's Wedding (and, of course, the other movies she's been in) and was blown away by her range and talent. I remember seeing her in The Sixth Sense and having to double check it was the same actress from Muriel's Wedding!

I'll have to watch Strictly Ballroom; I've heard of it but never seen it.

Before Hereditary, I saw Carnival of Souls (1962), which was a longer, creepier version of the Twilight Zone episode "The Hitch-Hiker." I don't think that's a spoiler because the plot seemed quite obvious from the beginning. That didn't detract from the movie's appeal. I thought it was great.

I'm definitely going to track that one down!

Is that the father from Muriel's Wedding I see in that trailer?
Just added it to my watchlist on Prime. I'll have to pay for a rental, but I think it'll be worth it.

I have a bunch of WWII documentaries on my watchlist; this will be a good way to lighten the mood in between those.

And that is indeed the same actor: Bill Hunter.

Yep, he basically played the same character in both movies that I watched in the past week: Crime 101 and Zodiac where he played a kind of of schlubby cop who wants to do the right thing, but obstacles stand in his way.

Last night I watched the 2016 "Mother's Day" on YouTube. Directed by Garry Marshall and starring Jennifer Aniston, Kate Hudson, Julia Roberts, Jason Sudeikis, Hector Elizondo, and the (in my estimation) often underrated Margo Martindale.

IMDB gave it a 5.7, but I was in the mood for feel-good romantic comedy and this measured up perfectly. I'd give it a 7.3 if you're looking for a little light, fun fluff.

There was a quick, witty scene with Roberts and Elizondo that was a nod to "Pretty Woman" that one would only catch if familiar with that movie.
