What was the worst job you ever had?

Definitely my very first one. I was 16 or 17. It was in a dusty garment factory. I was doing what used to be called piece work. Apparently I didn't work fast enough and was fired after the first week. Boy was I glad!! It was a boring job; one that let me know early on that I wasn't cut out for factory work.

I think my worst job was when I worked as a draftsman in the late '80s and early '90s. I liked it when we did manual drafting on drafting tables, but after a few years at that company, we switched to CAD systems with little 12" monitors. God, that was tedious work on a computer. It didn't help that I was suffering from bad insomnia and my eyesight wasn't very good due to a stigmatism. I also needed glasses, but I don't know why I didn't go to an optometrist. Maybe I didn't want to spend the money.

But the good thing about that job was that it was so horrible, I decided to quit and go back to college to get a Bachelor's degree in something that would be more fun. I wound up studying computer science and spent the rest of my life working as a software engineer. The '90s were the beginning of the tech boom, so that worked out pretty well.

I work with the MP's in the military one time , while my unit was refitting, because we had so many people killed, loved it , had my own jeep driver, worked with CID once, under cover, hated it.

I worked for a major phone company well before cell phones became common. We had an oncall list for computer problems. The boss told us we could not go anywhere on the weekends where we could not be reached by phone or if the driving time to come into work was over 60 minutes. When I opined that the company could not tell me what I could and could not do with my person time, my boss told me that "your salary includes money to pay you for being on call at all times". Funny, nobody mentioned that in the interview and hiring process. I lasted 6 months then bailed out.

When I was a student, I took all the kinds of jobs that people do when they need fast and easy cash. I cleaned a lot of things. Kitchens and hotel floors mainly.

I wasn't great but I didn't really think too much about it as it was only short-term. Free food in these places though, so that was great.

In my early twenties, I had a job in a publishing company. The manager of my department was one of these old-school types who had started off in the company as a post boy at 16 years of age or whatever and then just became elevated to the department he was managing.

He had a corner office, big desk, huge sofa in his office, the works. I think these jobs were often referred to as 'jobs for the boys'.

This guy always claimed that his door was always open -- meaning he was willing to help anyone -- but his door was actually always closed.

I had to learn every part of the job on my own or by asking other people in the department. While the manager seemed to take fault in everything I did.

I can remember taking this personally and it actually got to me. I thought I was useless and a terrible person in the company.

Until I was talking to an older friend that I had at the time, who just put it very bluntly and described the guy in very short terms that I won't put here!

The next day I handed my notice in. I gave a full four weeks notice and fulfilled all the things I was supposed to do before leaving.

When I gave my notice, the manager gave me a kind of sneer of contempt and said that at last they could now find someone more suitable to do the job.

Maybe he did. No idea.

But I left and life got a little bit easier.

Good life lesson though. Avoid people who drag you down and try to make you feel small. They serve zero purpose to anyone.

I worked for 1 day, phoning people to buy ad space in a condo newspaper .. boring .. it was just me, and one guy, in a room. When I quit, they understood.

I have had so many jobs with at least half of them terrible. For many years, before supporting myself with writing and editing, I worked secretarial jobs where I was demeaned and even somewhat abused. This was many years ago when secretaries were treated like office wives or worse. But reading about chicken droppings and digging underneath houses is quite the reality check, so I won't complain.
