Similar story with my Fiat. Came around a residential corner & hit a '57 Chevy hanging out the driveway. Barely dented his bumper but total my Fiat - unibody construction went like a beer can. Both doors popped open and the engine came forward.

Back when, we found, from the people next door, that if our Border Collie was left in the house he'd howl until he recognized the sound of our vehicle returning.

The truck though........if we parked in the shade, put all the windows down, not a peep, he'd just get comfortable.

Figured his rationale was that houses we could just walk away from, but vehicles......a whole 'nother story.
 
Mine was a 1968 Chrysler Imperial. Leather seats, front disc brakes, air, electric windows, electric seats, 15 inch tires-the works. Of course, when I had it, it was in 1976, and the electronics were shot, so was most of the car. It was a massive car. You could land planes on the hood. It rolled down the road so smoothly. You could never find a parking spot, most were too small. Strange, I don't remember it being a huge gas guzzler, though?

Best cars ever—1958 Chevrolet Impala w/‘348, 1962 Chevrolet Impala w/‘327, 1965 Chevrolet Impala SS w/‘427 and
1967 Chevrolet Chevelle SS w/‘396.

Combining a VW front end with a ‘57 Chevrolet backend is an insult to all Chevrolets.

For the past year, I have been searching for a new car. When it comes to buying a car, I am very particular. I am torn between a GMC Yukon XL Denali and a Chevrolet Suburban LTZ. The price is a consideration, but the vehicle that I like the best is most important. I am leaning toward the Suburban with the 5.3, 4-wheel drive. The Yukon XL Denali is the same vehicle, just the name is different.

I have appointments on Friday with a GMC and a Chevrolet dealership to drive both. There shouldn’t be a difference in the ride or the handling. Both vehicles are identical. Both vehicles are in the $80,000+ price range. I like all the buttons and whistles and being that I only keep it for 3 years, everything us guaranteed.

I will be moving to Jacksonville, Florida in late spring and 4-wheel drive is not necessary, but I will be traveling back to Virginia from time to time to visit the friends that I have made here, so having 4-wheel drive in the winter could be helpful, but it does take about 2-4 mpg off the rating. Tough call.

My niece told me she just bought a new VW. We had a long conversation about new cars when she was here over Thanksgiving and I thought I had her talked out of buying a VW, but she is a woman with a mind of her own and I can’t complain about that.

Chevrolet made a square body truck from I believe ‘73-‘87. A friend of mine that lives about 50 miles from me and was in the Marines with me bought what is called a barn truck, one that sat in a barn for years or a field and he drove past it one day, stopped and asked the owner how much he wanted for it. The old farmer told my friend he could have it just to tow it away, but my friend is too honest and gave the old farmer $350 for it. It was in really bad shape inside and out.

He knew I was a gear head and asked if I would give him a hand restoring it. I told him at the time that it would probably cost about $30,000 or maybe more to restore it, but he was kind of like me, no family or obligations to spend his money on, so he said “Let’s do it.”

We ended up spending just over 3 years working on it here and there. I brought the engine back to my home where I have a 3-car garage and rebuilt it. I had to buy an engine stand and a few tools I didn’t have. I was surprised to see that it had a ‘350 cu.in. engine in it, which made it very easy to work on. My friend rebuilt the transmission and rear end. Together we did the interior, but replaced the seats, floor boards, inside door panels and dash with gauges. Yes, we visited a lot of car shows where we found a lot of vendors that had what we needed, including after market fenders. There is not 1 ounce of plastic in that body. We did buy a lot of after market parts.

When he sold it, he sold the project book, trophies, pictures and all the spare parts, including the extra paint with it for one price. I could tell it almost broke his heart selling it. I kind of had mixed emotions, but it was a show stopper winning 31 trophies at different car shows and over $10,000 in prize money. We towed it to Nashville to a “Good Guys Car Show” and won $1800, which was the biggest one day prize the truck won. All together, my friend figured we had about $27,000 in it, not including labor hours. I spent some of my own money, so he gave me 20% of the take. A month after he sold it, he called me up and asked if I would do another. I had to think about it, but decided not to because of the amount of time it takes, especially waiting on parts. That was the worse part of restoring the truck. It seemed I was always waiting for a part or parts. Then if the company sends you the wrong part and you have to ship back the wrong part and wait on the right part, all that time can take up to a month.

This is close to the color we used, except the bottom was black enamel.

My favorite car is the one I have now - 2021 Honda Accord Hybrid.
It does everything you want a car to do & does it very well.
Roomy, comfortable, Fast, Top-rated safety, perfect size, air conditioner is freezing, heater really heats.
And 54 mpg & over 600 mile range ain't bad, either.

I love old Ford trucks. Mine were a bit on the larger side though. :)
A couple of blondes in the back didn't hurt either. (y)
