What would nuclear war look like in Ukraine between Russia and NATO?

Well, you know we probably wouldn't stand by. We do have ships with nukes and depending on how much value we place on Ukraine, it's debatable if we'd strike.

When @kburra first posted this I thought the possibility very remote. I still don't think it will happen, not an all out war anyway, but now I am thinking that as Putin feels desperate... His positioning of tactical nuclear weapons in Belarus worries me. The conditions Putin describes for their use "only be used if Russia's territory or state was threatened" have arguably been met. Of course he doesn't need them in Belarus to use them, just an escalation...

He could just use a single tactical strike to try and show NATO how serious he is about holding on to the Ukrainian territory he has taken. With Putin hoping it would not lead to escalation. Not sure that would be a much harder decision for him than the invasion itself was.

Hope he doesn't but I believe our leaders, and us, need to be thinking about what our response could or should be if it happens... Nothing good about this war, never is.

There's always a lot of "posturing" and "Sabre Rattling" that goes on in these situations, but pretty much everyone knows, there is a limit, and if you push beyond that, it will become your worst nightmare and the end of your country. I doubt that a nuclear exchange would happen between NATO and Russia because there is nothing to be gained. Everyone loses.
However, in the event that it did, the MAD concept is inaccurate. Many incoming missiles would be intercepted, but not all. Many would survive, but it would be a rough ride for sure. No one really knows if a nuclear winter would happen, as it would all depend on if the debris made it all the way into the upper levels of the atmosphere. If it didn't, the debris would become fallout. Severe radiation is generally limited to roughly a 50 mile radius of the blast (Depending on the megatons). Radioactive fallout would follow the prevailing winds and dissipate as it traveled.
Taking out military targets (Missile silos, etc...) would be the goal, not necessarily cities. That's why our nukes are placed away from populated areas, for the most part. There would be many challenges, food, water, gas, supplies, etc..., but many have prepared for worst case happenings, and they would make it through, and quite possibly many others. People can be very resilient.
Again, I seriously doubt this would happen over Ukraine, as it could mean Putin would sacrifice his entire nation just to gain some extra land, which he wouldn't end up with anyway. Even for him, it has to make sense on some level.

This is the cooling pond at the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Station after the Kakhovka Dam was blown up. The reservoir is now back to just the original river channel and the cooling pond cut off from the water needed to cool the plant. It's been estimated that cooling will be possible for a month in the current situation.

It all depends on the size of the bombs. The number of Kilotons (KT) will decide how big of an area will be affected. For example, 1 KT is equal to about 1000 tons of TNT. That's enough to take down a fairly large city block. The Russians have a variety of sizes of nuclear bombs in their stockpile, so it depends how big of a message Putin wants to send to Ukraine to end the war. Maybe Putin would drop a small nuke just to send the message that "I warned you."

Hard to imagine that use of ANY nukes would go unanswered.

If there were any survivors, then we will all be
living in the equivalent of a "Mad Max" movie,
only all over the world, because the winds do
not respect borders and they will carry sickness
everywhere, so if you survive, try and get near
a warm area of the world, you cannot grow in
ice and snow.

Good luck to you all.

Mike.

There are little bits and pieces that suggest, there was a nuclear
war many thousand of years before history was recorded, as it is
today, there are hints that can be found in India, like a radioactive
mountain, unexplained folklore about fighting machines in the sky,
etc., it all adds up to interesting reading, there are some translations
from the Sanskrit to English.

The god Krishna, got his/her, reputation as being a fighter from that
time, before he/she, was a god.
