What's in your geenhouse this year?

Now that spring is here , or almost here depending on which part of the Northern Hemisphere you live in what are your plans for your greenhouse, herb garden, or vegetable patch?

I have parsley, mint, thyme, lemon balm, dill and rosemary in my herb garden and will be adding oregano, basil and marjoram this year.

I already have garlic and strawberries that were planted last year in my greenhouse and as soon as it gets a little warmer we'll be adding tomatoes, cucumber, spring onions, lettuce, paprika and chili. My fig and lemon trees will go outside when there's no more risk for frost.

The vegetable patch will have potatoes, beetroots, artichokes, carrots, broccoli and cauliflower.

We only grow veggies that can be grown in planter boxes now. I have started several things in the house and early greens like kale and collards and daikon radish outside in the back garden area. I live in northern Alabama, so we have a good growing season here, and by next month should be able to start things like peppers, squash and tomatoes.
I have planted some savory (herb) in one pot, and am going to start the Malabar spinach (a hot weather spinach) next, as well as trying yet again to grow rhubarb. Rhubarb grows great in cooler climates, but dies in our hot summers here, even when I planted it in a shady area with only morning sun.
This year, I am going to put it into a planter box and leave it outside until we get into the heat of summer, and then I will bring it inside and put it near a window where it can get sun, but be out of the hot weather.

I transplanted my Josta berries into the planter box that my husband made for them, and they are growing and starting to get a few blossoms, so I am hoping to be able to taste a few this year. Here is a picture and you can see the tiny blossom buds forming.

I wish I had a greenhouse, but one day I'm hoping.

Have always dreamed of having a greenhouse.
My greenhouse is a set of 3 shelves in front of a window upstairs. Eventually I move them to the roof outside my bathroom window and bring them in at night until it becomes warm enough to let them out all night too. I then plant them in a permanent location at the end of May.

I've utilized my basement and kitchen windows for many years now, too, and I remember my mom doing the same.

My grandparents had a wooden box built into the ground, extending a foot or two above ground height, with windows that could be opened and closed (fixed to the top horizontally), and what a great greenhouse/hothouse design it made for.

Simple but effective.

I put my little greenhouses which are the containers from precooked chicken that comes from our super market. I save them from year to year. I punched holes in the bottom for drainage.
They are in my front window on my tea cart and window sill.
The peppers are a bit slow so they still have their plastic dome on top.
I am planting the usual tomatoes, peppers, beans ,cucumbers, swiss chard. watermelon and cantaloupe basil and mint. My parsley usually comes back as well as the rhubarb.
I have flower seeds started just for picking. I put them in the back of the garden which is fenced in.
In a few weeks I'll plant my sugar snap peas but it will be weeks before I can plant the rest.
The one new veggie I'm trying are grape tomatoes. We love them from the store in winter and last year I saw the plants but they were quite expensive. This year for the first time they had packets of the seeds. They are up already.
I'm not going to put them in the garden. I have a very large planter so they will be easier to pick and won't get lost in the garden, of course I'll have to cover them so the deer don't dine on them. plants.JPG

Those darned deer, as much as we love them for their cuteness, they get into everything.

A true green-thumb you are, Ruth! Looks great!

Everything sounds so mouthwatering good, particularly the grape tomatoes! I hope they take for you.

How did you make out on your cantaloupe crop last year? We have friends that plant it every year and nothing happened, and the few that did take were rotten.
