What's on that plate at the Last Supper?

"There are two paintings in South America that have become famous because Jesus shares with his apostles a cuy or guinea pig, that is, a typical dish of Andean cuisine.

Guinea pigs are native to Peru and can still be found today on many restaurant menus in Cusco, the ancient capital of the Inca empire."

The last supper is supposed to have taken place in Jerusalem, though. But it makes total sense to me that Peruvian or SA artists or even Spanish artists would have something familiar or relatable on the plates in their paintings.

If Jesus was Hebrew, he definitely would not eat a rodent. Maybe not any kind of meat. Maybe lentils instead, and some matza on the side. :p

I just googled "What was eaten at the Last Supper?" and got this answer:

Recent research suggests a bean stew, lamb, olives, bitter herbs, a fish sauce, unleavened bread, dates and aromatized wine likely were on the menu at the Last Supper.M

Whatever is laying feet up on the platter does not look like it going to feed 13.
Not likely, guinea pigs are about the size of large rats. Although 1/13th would have been more than enough for me.
Clearly, rodent.
Yep, guinea pigs are rodents. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guinea_pig

I had a botany prof who used to point out errors in the works of masters, showing the wrong species of cactus at the crucifixion, things like that. Didn't detract much from my appreciation of the art.

We have visited Peru and also that cathedral in Cusco. The animal on the plate in the painting is guinea pig...the staple meat in Peru.
While we were there I became vegetarian, lol.

Researchers say the food at the Last Supper was cholent, which makes sense since meat was scarce and beans and herbs mainly used.

I remember hearing a comedian say that in the famous Last Supper painting, there is very little food on the table, just fish. He said that it must have been painted on a Friday because if DaVinci, being a Catholic, had to forgo meat on Fridays, the Jews weren't going to have it either.

As far as there being a guinea pig in the Peruvian painting, that would only be natural. I haven't been to Peru but I have been to Ecuador and guinea pig is a very common dish. They grill them out on the sidewalk and sell them to passers-by. They still have their teeth and tails. I've eaten a lot of strange things (I ate roasted grubs in Ecuador) but I had to draw the line at guinea pig. I had numerous guinea pigs as pets in my youth and I could not stomach eating one of my pets. I'm sure it's quite tasty but it would be like eating dog or cat.....
