What's The Worst Forum You Have Ever Been On?

I belonged to a now defunct financial retirement forum for a couple of years about ten years ago. I was eventually banned because I often defended small business owners - which I was and am. I was banned after daring to state that customers aren't always right and in fact, customers are often in the wrong. In any case, the site owner sang mostly a one-note financial song based on his interpretation of the "Rich Dad Poor Dad" book and often included advertising links in his postings to yield him financial rewards when forum members clicked through and purchased.

Leaving there was no great loss, but the experience was valuable because it opened me up for another type of forum...

I've cruised several of the forums others mentioned above, but this is the only place that I call home.

Despite mostly detesting it because of the endless politicking, complaining and gossiping, I am a member of NextDoor. I joined under a pseudonym and fake, nearby address. I rarely view the site and never post, but continue to belong as a source of info when during local emergencies.
haha..I did the same.. I joined under an alias.. and then they sent loads of invites to my 'neighbours' on my behalf which in actual fact encompasses half the nearby town by Next Doors' standards..
I would imagine everyone who got those invites wondered who the heck 'Jane Doe' was.../is... but lots of people joined tho'..despite not knowing the name on their invitation card..

News sites that allow comment forums can be pretty brutal. What I hated most was when two people would argue about some difference of opinion and go on page after page. Ah you're both wrong.
Oh I have read these. It's nuts. Some people will argue to infinity and have to have the last word. Find two of those and it never ends.

I know this is an old thread but I just wanted to add my nickle.

I haven't joined a forum in years. Years ago I used to frequent a fragrance forum, that shall remain nameless, but it was very cliquey. It was just too exclusive for me. I don't want to have to "break in". When it comes to something as subjective as fragrance, it's a matter of taste and what personally appeals to you. Same thing with food or clothes. I might not like the same things you do but I'm not gonna poo poo your choices or what you like. That's just bullpucky. Everyone is entitled to his/her opinion and although I might disagree with them I try to be respectful and tolerant. If someone wants to pick a fight, well ... I can put up my dukes as good as anybody, but I choose not to. :)

When I join a forum it's to be part of it. To interact with others, not just drop a post. To find camaraderie, people to converse with, share with, to offer support/friendship/compassion and to have FUN!

While I was looking around for a place to hang my hat, I posted on AARP a few times. That's as long as it lasted. It wasn't the worst but ... yawn 🥱, lol.

I've only been here a few days but I really like it. There's a lot of activity and different interests and members from far and wide. So far I've encountered nothing but nice, kind, friendly people who have a great sense of humor. Looks like this place is right up my alley!

I belonged to a couple of true crime sites years ago. Covering cold cases can be challenging because there isn't always anything new to contribute. One day I went to read up and see what was going on and my account had been deactivated for non posting. I would have had to re-register so I just said forget it. At the other we a had a very disruptive member who always posted his opinions on the case ad nauseum and was finally banned for fighting with everyone. Few people liked him. After a few months he was allowed back because he was an ardent poster and I guess the site's owner felt he was needed.

When he attacked me personally, I left and the site folded. They said they were taking a few months off due to lack of participation. I haven't checked back.

When I started using forums I joined a few to see how things would go, one I quite liked but it didn’t have many word games (my main interest) so I set up lots of different games which became very popular then, after a few months one long term member who thought he owned the site, (there’s a lot of it about)... started criticising the way I was playing my own games !!

I’m now happily settled with three forums, can’t see myself leaving. :)

...There, the patriots out numbered the right wingers and we often had a field day crucifying them
Really? Your mindset was to join an outnumbering clique of leftists and enjoy "having a field day crucifying the outnumbered right"? Isn't this the very mindset that causes a forum to be a "Worst Forum"?

My mindset is to carefully word my posts and read other's posts carefully to avoid misunderstandings, seek the truth, and possibly learn something new from a peaceful adult-like discussion. I often learn something new. I grow from it. No stress. No hurts. Lots of respect. It really helps me to fine tune my communication skills.

Yet I do encounter some bigotry and bullying at times by others who seem to find enjoyment in the "boxing ring" focused on winning. It closes the door to what could have been a productive understanding of how each side comes to their opposite conclusions. It's interesting that way.

Aggressiveness ensues as a defense mechanism by those who view another's sharing as a personal attack...when really, they are just sharing their own view without the expectation to change anyone's mind. It's more of a personal journey on both sides to share together.

This forum, SF, has improved over time in fostering respectful conversations on hot topics.
@Matrix deserves a lot of credit knowing when to step in and when to leave things be. Excellent.

I agree with your post Lara.. well said, but just one thing, there are no Mods on here now, there was only one for 9 years which was @SeaBreeze, but now @Matrix runs this forum alone, and it's all credit to him, and to us of course....that this forum runs as smoothly as it does..
