What's up with Tennessee?! They think the constitution doesn't apply to them.

Some FB friends just posted some news regarding TN and how it seems to think the US Constitution doesn't apply to them.

First they've voted to make the Bible the state book.

Then voted to ban federal gun laws in TN.

I lived in this state for 10 years and unfortunately this is where my presidential vote is counted. While I lived there some judges were trying to put the 10 commandments on the wall of their courtroom.

I knew I was in the bible belt while I lived there but are these politicians totally stupid in thinking they can ignore federal laws?

As our states were put together, they did hold superior rights over other states. Their only obligation to honor federal rules was for federal reasons. But over the most recent 50 or so years the federal government keeps passing rules that over run the states rights. So in stead of a federal government supporting 50 states we are close to having 50 states subordinated to a federal government. Problem is, that is not how the Constitution is set up at all.

Other representatives said recognizing the Bible as the state book and putting it alongside the official state tree, song or dance would trivialize it.
Tennessee has an official song and dance?
How droll.

What does it even mean to have a state book?

The second link is much more disturbing. It is a path to anarchy and the crumbling of the concept of nationhood.

I don't think it is unusual in the US for states to have their own items of ritual. Don't you folks in Australia have personalization things for your territories/states and the country of Australia's government?

I've never heard of a state book or state song or dance. State flower and bird, yes.

Yes, and I believe they also have open carry laws for guns without a permit. So any idiot who can legally own a gun can carry one.

Just as it should be in the US. What the folks in England decide to do is their business. A big concern in the US is we need a smaller government but it just keeps on getting bigger and meaner, not better.

Just did a bit of research. It would appear the Tennessee's state book in not the Bible per se.
It is Andrew Jackson's Bible.

Does this fact change everyone's perspective.
Why would this book be significant for Tennessee?

State book

Andrew Jackson's Bible The Holy Bible is the official book of Tennessee in the view of the Tennessee House of Representatives. Despite questions of constitutionality, lawmakers beat back an attempt to make Andrew Jackson's Bible the official book and voted 55-38 in favor of Rep. Jerry Sexton's original bill.

I don't think so. Many of our US states are wanting to keep their independent control of local events, schools, whatever and they would like to end this recent years federal government wanting to take over all controls of people and the states also. For many folks they would like to see our government made much smaller and reduced in manpower size in order to cut down our expenses and debts created. Otherwise, that means we would look like a lot of European countries with half the population being government employees. In those cases the other half need to work hard to get their taxes paid to support the other half that is the government with no means to creat wealth at all. What a cycle of 'down the drain' that must be.

I'm inclined to think by adapting the Bible as The State Book symbolizes Tennessee's disregard for any separation of Church and State and is their way of saying Religion and Government go hand in hand.

You need to take a deep breath before you jump to conclusions. The Tennessee Senate killed the bill. Killed it even though they have Republican super majorities in both the house and senate, along with a Republican governor.

England? BTW England is one country in Britain and the UK. I don't live in England. And only hunting rifles are owned by the public and cops don't carry guns except special weapons squads.

We don't have weekly reports of toddlers shooting each other because some moron left a gun where a child could get it. We also don't have cops shooting people in the back.

AS, I hope your vote actually gets counted.

I hope so too. I read somewhere that the 6 million (?) Americans living abroad who vote absentee ballot are overwhelmingly Democrats.

It is surprising that TN had a governor who was a Democrat while I lived there, and previously he'd been in the TN House of Reps. I avoided talking about politics at work, or religion. I remember walking into the office in 1992 after Clinton had won and I was excited about having been at a big party where many were watching the election returns. My boss was not happy, she thought the country was doomed.
