What's your great memory?

I have three:

Nighttime, Dad is pointing out the stars. I'm 4.

Dad coming out of the post office, smile on his face, tall like a giant, God I loved him. 4

Getting spanked by Dad, 2 out of three ain't bad.
Have to laugh. Because i didn't even mind the few spankings i got from Dad. You see he had set rules with set consequences. Told us we were free to choose how to behave but he would not tolerate any whining about consequences. (With Mom you couldn't even call it 'discipline' because her responses to our behaviors were dependent on her mood at the time and it could change on a dime.) There were times i decided the activity was worth the consequence but i always made sure i told Dad before anyone else could even if unlikely Mom or sisters knew. If Spanking was the specified discipline it was perfunctory because i'd owned what i did and that made him a little proud.

Wow, thinking about the implications of the wording of that question. In life time of ups and downs and mixed blessing situations how the hell could i pick just one as being 'great'?

And how are we defining 'great'---because to me it isn't just the unquestionably good, happy memories that i feel are 'great'. For me if a memory is about something that shaped who i am now, helps me understand myself and others better--it is a 'great' memory.

My most pleasant memories involve Nature (including both domestic and wild animals), my Dad, my kids and grandson.

It was after a fire and my mom and I went to my home to throw out all the food in the kitchen. We started cleaning out the fridge - the eggs were in the door egg holder so we were taking one at a time and carefully putting them in the garbage bag so they didn't break. We each had an egg in our hand, looked at each other, then started smashing them in the garbage. Then we laughed 'til we cried.

It was not necessarily the greatest memory - but I think I remember feeling closer to my mom than at any other time in my life. Just thinking about it made me laugh - and cry.
