When all else fails and things are going awful what do you do?

I was looking at my prayer habits as an agnostic. It seems I only pray when the situation is horrible, just being honest here, really horrible!

What do you do when things seem to be going really bad for you or someone you know or for others or for our country, etc.?

I think in every moment humans pray, even when we aren't offering up 'words' you know. I think it comes down to intention and attitude and as our very thoughts are energy impulses, they affect change to some degree. And when you have groups of people, with the same feelings of pain or grief or gladness, you have a bigger field of energy/impulses potentially causing change to occur.

I guess what I'm saying is, I don't think you have to engage in a formalized prayer event to be a cause for change, good or bad.

I see what you mean and like those ideas!

When things go to pot, I try to carefully analyze what happened, and see if there is anything I could have done to prevent it. If so, I resolve to learn from the experience, and pay more attention in the future. If Not, I write it off, correct the damages, and get on to other things. Life is too short to worry about events that we have little or no control over.

True.

In golf, you can never replay the last stroke. All you can do is look forward, not allowing one bad stroke turn into two or three. That's sorta the way I look at life. There is nothing I can do about what happened 1 minute, 1 day, 1 year ago. The only thing I can control are things that will happen in the present or the future. Learn from your mistakes. Move forward.

I take a deep breath, try to look at the "big picture" and put my problem in perspective, then deal with it and move on. When I remind myself of the suffering and misery some other folks in the world are going through, I just count my blessings that my problem is not so severe.

I agree wholeheartedly. And I also try to remember that in life, sometimes things just go south and it usually all seems to come at once. Most of it is out of our control anyway -- like a while ago when my dog got very sick, I had a major plumbing problem, and my old car died, all in the same month -- so I just keep plodding along.

Yes, I try to have gratitude, too, for all I have.

I have had times like that too Butterfly. How is it going now?

Also watch less news. Most media news is depressing, negative and sensationally presented. I know since I quit watching news on a daily basis, I have a better outlook and feel less need to pray.

Yes the news does get depressing with it bombarding our senses; I am trying to watch it much less now.

My philosophy too Don - if you cant fix it just learn from it and move on. I would also add laughter to the mix.
Good point, I love to laugh!

I pray!
Coming home from holiday last week the turbulence was so 'awful' for 8 and a half hours, not a soul moved from seat (except for one poor man who became violently ill).
I prayed silently, with folded hands.

My hubby has a tendency to say stop worrying about whatever is bothering me. We are very different in regards to how we handle stress. I was extremely close to my Mom and Dad. They both have been gone for several years but when things don't go right or I have a situation that I'm struggling with I lay in bed at night and talk it over with them. I feel better after that.

Live in the past and have regrets. Live in the future and worry. Live in the present and be happy. I am a WWI buff. When things are really going badly, I think "I'm better off than being in a wet shell hole with decomposing bodies while under heavy artillery fire." That usually helps.
