When Christmas Isn't Merry

I want to take a moment to say that I was just thinking about all the loss I've seen here on SF since arriving just a year ago (exactly a year tomorrow.) And I'm thinking of all of you who are having a different and sad kind of Christmas this year. There has been loss of spouses, children, siblings, and beloved pets. I started doing some tagging but backed up so I wouldn't miss anyone. I'm thinking of you all and if you want to talk to someone, please hit me with a PM. I'm usually lurking around here off and on from 6 a.m. until 7 p.m. eastern U.S. time.

I also feel the loss of some members I truly enjoyed hearing from and reading their posts. I hope everything is well for them this holiday season. I miss @IKE , @Chet , @Sassycakes , @NorthernLight , @Alligatorob ... well I probably should have refrained from starting to tag there, too, because there are quite a few. Anyhow, hugs to all who are struggling tonight. 🤗 My heart is with you in spirit. :cry: ~Kate

Mental health professionals tend to be extremely busy over the Xmas season with those for whom the time is not “merry and bright.” Xmas and New Year’s tend to hold a mirror up to any deficiencies or absences in our lives, and suffering can increase due to unmet or unrealistically high expectations...
 
I know northernlight made a thread stating she was leaving the forum. No reason stated. It was deleted by moderation.

I too hope the people who have not posted in some time are OK. I have not seen packer john in a bit. It has to be very hard for people who have good memories and have now suffered loss.

I'm the opposite. The holiday time was miserable growing up and I ignored it for years. Now I enjoy it as much as I can and decorate a bit. I have fun at the thrift stores finding things. So I take what I can get from the holiday season.
 
Yes, Northern Light annouced her leaving the site. I felt we did not offer her the contact she needed. She wanted a connection to her intelligence, to discuss things that were above most of us or did not not enjoy.

I think @Packerjohn is off on one of his long adventures and will return when he is back. He loves to travel for months at a time.

I think that's the best thing we can do in life whether it's Christmas or just any day, take what you can get from the day and have fun with life.

Same here. So it was an adjustment for me when I married my huzz; Christmas was a big deal to him growing up; they were dirt poor and his dad was a violent, abusive alcoholic, but his mom tried to make Christmas to be a wonderful time as much as she could. But since his mom died and since he and I never had kids, the great big, wonderful (as much as possible anyway) family get-togethers on his side have faded away and he can hardly stand it; he gets really depressed about how Christmases just aren't like they used to be. I like a more quiet Christmas myself, but not him.
 
Late to the party but my hatred of christmas dates back to early childhood. You could write a script and they'd (the egg and sperm donors) have followed it to the letter. drunken fights, beatings, my father raping me, you name it, Xmas was tons of fun.

But this year, with Xmas came the news one of my 13-year-old kitties has oral cancer and will die between two to four months from now. I have experienced cancer in past cats and he was gone in a week, but Kaz isn't hiding yet, though when he starts hiding, knowing what we know, will be the day he crosses the rainbow bridge. 30 years ago, this year, a cat of mine suffered because he was diabetic and I didn't know what a glucose crash was. He was dreadfully ill already, but I have lived with the guilt of waiting too long for 30 years.

I hope he has forgiven me.

I am in touch with NorthernLight on another forum. She's the one who suggested I check out this forum.

In a most recent post she said this...

"I had hoped to get some help regarding such adjustments on the senior forum, but the discussions there were more along the lines of favorite pizza toppings. And anyway I got banned from that forum. 😛 Seems I'm just not good at being a senior."
