When did you first ride on an airplane?

My first airplane ride happened when I was probably about six or seven. We flew from Los Angeles to Chicago and then drove to Wisconsin where my family is from. I don't remember any specifics of the plane ride itself, but I know from pictures that we dressed up for the flight. I do remember a portion of the flight back because we could see lightning down below us because we were flying back at night.

My next plane ride was in a small private plane when a local group did a "penny a pound" promotion where you paid based on your weight. I distinctly remember that flight and being able to see our house as we flew over it. It was what really started my love of airplanes and flying.

Though we moved from Province to Province when I was little, we always went by car. I was 21/22 when I took my first plane trip from Toronto to Vancouver. I made the trip from Vancouver to Toronto in '67 via train. Most of my plane trips were To/Van, as well as several To/Australia. My plane travel days are over, though I wouldn't mind another train trip.

In 1968, the plane ride was courtesy of the US Navy. I flew from an induction center in Massachusetts to Great Lakes Navy Base. The jet flight was uneventful. But after boot camp, the flight home was scary. It was a small prop job. There was a bad storm. We tried landing several times. On one of the tries, I was looking out the window at the landing strip as we were landing. Then it dawned on me that shouldn't the airport be IN FRONT of the plane. We had to fly around and the next time we did land.

Never as a child... My first airplane trip was for our 22th wedding anniversary. My husband planned a trip to Hawaii, for 10 days of island hopping.

I was terrified! It took a lot of mental preparation on my part to get on a plane. Finally the day came, and once I got into the first leg of the journey, I was hooked!! .. I couldn't believe myself because I loved every minute of it, even all the hours over the ocean. And I had to have the window seat..lol
After that, I was ready to go anywhere, anytime on a plane.

18 just out of boot camp. 1st. flight was in a Douglas DC-6. A MATS flight from McGuire AFB in N.J.To NAS Argentia Newfoundland. Just in case some are familiar with the acronyms MATS = Military Air Transport Services AFB = Air Force Base NAS = Naval Air Station.

When I asked why one of our many mis-matched teaspoons said "American Airlines" on it, Mom said that we had flown from Boston to Miami when I was about a year old, and that I wouldn't let go of it when they were cleaning up after lunch, so the stewardess let me keep it. Or maybe Mom just stole it.

That spoon was, thereafter, MY spoon, never to be touched by anyone else. Ever. Except when washing dishes. (I was 5 or 6 at the time). But then, one day, it vanished forever, never to be seen again. Nothing is sacred or safe in a house with eight kids.

High school nominated Georgia State Officer Distributed Education Clubs of America flew round trip to Los Angeles for National Convention

1956. Idlewild to Miami to visit dad's family & friends. We went several years thereafter to the same place for the same purpose. Propellers, of course, not jets. All little kids were always invited to the cockpit to meet the captain.

Had to be when I was 3 years old, so 70 years ago, OMGosh. I don’t remember it but I have a picture of me with mother at the airport and my aunt and grandmother saying goodbye. Grandmother is holding me, and I look unhappy. Next time I flew I was 18, off to basic training.
