When ever I cook I take down the smoke alarm and hide it in my bed, just in case

No need to have it screaming unnecessarily.
Happened a few times, needed to climb onto a chair to turn it off. So, so loud.
Okay, I get taking it down (well, I take the battery out, but only when I'm making sausage... nothing else makes it go off!) ... but why the bed ❓:) Assuming yours is different and you can't just remove the battery? Then no matter what you burn overcook make well-done :giggle: it wouldn't be screaming.

A simple twist removes the whole unit. Bed is handy.

Electrician gave me the best trick to prevent cooking smoke from setting off the smoke alarms in our house.

They're all linked so, if one goes they all go, it's simply deafening...

Grab a pack of clear (or coloured) shower caps. Cover each unit and voila, cook anything without a peep out of your detectors.

Our smoke detector in the kitchen (Kidde or First Alert - I don't recall which) has a lighted button on the bottom the mutes the alarm for a short period of time. We have a three-foot long, half-inch dowel that hangs in an inconspicuous spot. When the alarm goes off, we just grab the dowel and use it to press the mute button. Cheap, easy, and works just fine. :)
