When feeling a little down, what is your best way out?

Don't laugh, but going out in the rain helps me a lot, either walking in a gentle-to-moderate rain with an umbrella or just going out on the back patio and standing in the rain until I'm drenched. If it's coming down in buckets, all the better.

Normally, a waterfall cheers me up immensely, but we're short on them in Florida, so a leaky gutter has to suffice.....

There is a reason for this:

I have been a little down the past few weeks. I tell myself in a pep talk that life goes in cycles, we all have bumps on the road and hills to climb and the climb down is easier than the climb up.

I go out to my garden, watch the birds, read a book. And yes, like Jules just said, a great find at a thrift store cheers me up too.

And there was a full rainbow this morning, Nothing can be that bad when you see a rainbow.

I also find that having pets help a lot with mood. I just had a romp with my two tabby cats; they make me laugh so hard!
My ex told me one time that when you pet your dog, your blood pressure drops 3 points. I don't know if she read that or made it up, but petting my dog does do something that always makes me feel better. It's very calming. I don't know why. It's supposed to make the dog feel good, but I often do it for my benefit. The dog probably thinks it's my way of slobbering on him, as slobbering on me seems to be one of his favorite things, even if I can only take it for so long.

When I feel down I usually don't feel like doing tasks, or even things I enjoy.
For a lift, I'll go outside, get some sunlight and fresh air. Move the hose from tree to tree, pick up the dog do, wack a couple weeds. The mountains are fairly close by, it's hypnotic to just stand and gaze toward to mountains, there is a peacefulness that resides there, it comes into the heart. A trip to the gym, or a session on the treadmill or elliptical gets to "good feelings" flowing. Other remedies: watch old black & white programs, take a shower, declare Cocktail Hour early...

Getting outside to walk and exercise. A good sweat and getting the pulse rate up helps.

Sleep

Talking, really talking and not just mindless small talk with ms gamboolgal. Like lots of long married folks, she has always been able to pretty well read my mind and senses / knows if something is bothering me. And lots of times she knows what it is that is on my mind. She just knows. Hell, she can just look at me when I walk in a room and she will ask if something is wrong.

And finally - getting back to sleeping good - chasing ms gamboolgal around the old 4 Poster Buck Neckid.....and sometimes, she lets me catch her - Ha ! 🥰

Getting outside does it for me. Sometimes I just have to make myself go out, and then I get sidetracked with picking up sticks and doing a little raking and trimming some weeds....................... and then I don't want to go back in and spend hours out there.

I'm still looking for a remedy. And I need it fast.

My SO and I are both having significant health issues, last month we lost 2 more high school classmates (out of a class of about 40), a few days ago a cousin lost her seemingly healthy husband to a heart attack, and today that same cousin's father (my uncle) passed away.

So, if you don't mind, I'll just sit here and let the funk roll over me....

I totally understand..I listen to utube, put in the timer, set to a black screen, heavy rain, no thunder almost every night falling asleep. I also live in Florida so I hear rain a lot esp this time of year and love it! I don't relate to the getting drenched part, but I noticed a lot of people here walk in the rain with no umbrella and do not mind getting wet. My main complaint would be getting my hair wet :D

So sorry to hear of your health issues and also of your losses. That is one of the biggest disadvantages of getting older...we start losing people we grew up with and people in the news from years ago...I believe in a great big celebratory reunion when we join them....:)
