When I grow up, I want to be a...

I might be old but I did my annual Pole Top Rescue run last week and I’d say I was top 3 with my time. (Yes there were more than 3 participants, lol.) You race up a pole and rescue a 180 pound dummy with only a rope. Yay.

Your profile says male. I worked as a journalist and check my sources. :giggle: (And you didn't say powerlinewoman.)
While to me it doesn't really matter accept i'd rather not offend someone by using wrong pronouns-i am always a bit put off by people who seem to want to create drama/mystery/confusion about their identity. Has their life been that boring? Are they that boring they have to create artificial nonsense to keep people talking to them?

i can understand having a non-human 'profile pic', i did it briefly this winter when i was feeling kind of depressed. But the photo (of a downed log) had a 'facial expression of sorts that i was 'feeling' at the time. Other than that i usually put a real picture of me,, even if i need to get more recent one. Have a little more grey and a few more wrinkles.

Never gave a thought to a career or any kind of profession when young, just knew I had to work. And that's what I did so dream fulfilled! lol
i can relate to that. Came from working poor family. Graduated in 1964. My high school had several classes that prepared people for office work (yes they had more females than males): Bookkeeping, Business Law, Business Machines. But i was also the only working class kid in the advanced History and English classes 3 yrs running.

i was a junior in High School before guidance counselor mentioned scholarships to me. By that time my life was complicated by how much time i had to spend caring for my baby brother. My Mom returned to work 6 wks after he was born--first 2nd shift then midnight shift during senior year. i was often the one up with him in morning, feeding and changing him before i left for school; waking Mom up when she worked 2nd shift, blowing her a kiss in passing as she arrived home and i left for school when she was on Midnight shift.

Much as i love my brother, i wanted away from Mom. i was in VISTA by spring of '65, worked office temps between VISTA and working for SCLC summer of '66. those HS courses and on the job learning in first Office Temps served me well for many years. Being a quick learner if i stayed in one place long enough companies wanted me to stay working for them.

For my yearbook I put "Artist, Musician, Singer". My mother and father nixed me going to art school in New York. I did some artwork over the years, but not professionally, I never seriously pursued a singing career although I traveled with a gospel group with the possibility of becoming a member but realized I could never sing as loudly as they did (I called them gate mouths). My high school talent show and review show appearances as part of girl groups (trios) would have to suffice.

My working life started out in the clerical field but I wound up in the health field. Approximately half my working life was spent in public health, first as a V.D. Investigator (municipal) then Public Health Representative, later called Disease Intervention Specialist in the STD department, for the State. About 5 years after I retired, I officially became a recording artist after producing and releasing a multi genre album of original songs.

Sometimes its not drama/mystery/confusion about an identity that people limit their information. Sometimes its the opposite of boring.

I probably ran the usual gamut of wannabe careers. When I graduated from high school, I still hadn't decided on a profession. I was thumbing through a college catalog and saw a photo of a student putting samples in a centrifuge. I thought that looked interesting, so I took the medical technologist course which led to a career as a biochemist for state government.

When I was a little girl I remember wanting to be a dance teacher, a secretary, a mother, and a nurse.

I received my certification as a dance teacher and taught for five years. I had fifty students.

I was a mother of 3+2 children.

I was a corporate secretary for 38 years.

I studied nursing but never or got a nursing degree. But, I was a caregiver for my elderly family members.
I was trained to do peritoneal dialysis for my father. I took care of all his medications and his daily health concerns
for over 7 years.

So yes, I do feel I accomplished most of what I aspired to be. 😊

It was always assumed that I would be an artist as I showed talent and interest is art from an early age. As a senior in High school I won a scholarship to the Syracuse Nursing School. Being from a very low income family, I did the "sensible" thing and elected to accept the nursing education - which caused my father to completely reject the idea of assisting me financially (he probably wouldn't have assisted me to begin with). He told me I would never finish the program. I married after three years and became pregnant right away, so the school insisted I drop out. My father was right there with, "I told you so". I did go back 10+ years later out of desperation to escape a seriously deteriorating marriage. I graduated with a BSN and worked in Nursing for almost 30 years. It made a huge difference in my life. An ultimately very lucky decision.

Never thought about what I'd do to support myself. Didn't have marriage on my mind until I met the woman I married. Job wise way to many to list so maybe just not being bored with being locked into one job was a great way to get thru life .
