"When I grow up, I'm going to be..."

As children, we all dream of what we want to be when we grow up. Often, many young children will say that they want to be actors or singers, pop stars or models. Some will say that they want to become teachers, firefighters, police officers.

What did you want to be and did it happen?

Nope, the old yearbook of '57 said I wanted to join
the Indiana Highway Patrol.....not even close.....

I wanted to be a teacher is what I said when asked but really wanted to be an actress. The closet I got to being an actress was in a play in junior high and I thought I was the greatest.

A train driver or a race car driver.

An astronomer. The closest I got is the Planetarium.

Actor. Tried and took classes, too late in life
Writer. Mostly and published.
Forums are writing.

Took acting lessons in New York City in the late 70's. Had small roles in 5 Off Off Broadway shows. Off Off Broadway is the entry level for people starting out, actors, directors etc. They were non paying. But as a kid, I only had my mind on one thing.

As a pup I wanted to be either a cop or a heavy equipment operator....didn't end up being either one but all in all I'm pretty happy with the cards I was dealt and how things turned out.

No thank goodness. I harbored the notion of becoming a linguist, working for the CIA

Instead I went to work for General motors wiring division and made a lot of money during the years I was there — then lost a lot of money in the late 90’s stock market broo-ha

Never thought about what I wanted to do, never had career fantasies or planned a career path, all I knew is I had to get a job to make money.

I wanted to grow up to be a radio DJ. A local radio DJ would have us teens in the studio when he played "that rock & roll" music. The problem was a DJ has to read copy-news, ads, etc.; and having dyslexia I can't read out loud.
My idol was a WBZ DJ, Juicy Brucey Bradley.

I wanted to be a psychiatric nurse, because my best friend's mother, who I liked very much, was in and out of the psyche unit.

Working for my dad doing electrical work in the summers quickly taught me that was not anything I wanted to do the rest of my life, so I went into accounting, which was a disappointment to him, but worked out well for me.

As a younger adult I realised that growing up was optional and growing older wasn't.

I always thought I'd be a cartoonist or a writer.
Cowboy was another option.
Cartooning fell by the side of the road of life, writing kind of did the same but I had a few things, poems mostly published.
A younger version of me worked as a cowboy, but I got dragged to town and a factory job by my (ex) wife.
The last 25 years I've been the IT manager for a manufacturing company. Not exactly my dream job, but paid the bills.

I wanted to be a super-duper housewife like June Cleaver, doing the shopping, keeping the house spotless, cooking nutritious meals, running the PTA , all while looking like a model and raising two nice kids.

Obviously this was just before homemaking became a shameful occupation, first because there was no money in it, and second because it was traditionally considered "women's work." Women's work being of no value according to...er... women.

I told people I wanted to be a psychiatrist, but deep down I wanted to be a writer. I've written some things, but have never been paid for them.

A fireman, some sort of automotive engineer, a musician. Had a lot of jobs from age 13, but no career in any of this just mentioned. Wound up being a freelance journalist and later a manager of a regional business association.

I had no real aspirations, I just wanted to survive.... I didn;t think anything would be available to me, I'd never been encouraged to be or do anything other than be a wage earner for my father... so there didn't seem to be worth imagining a life I never thought would be possible

I wanted to be a high school history teacher. I even started working for my history major in college. At that time in the early 70's there seemed to be a more teachers than there were positions in location. I decided to change to a business major.

That worked out well for me but having summers off as a teacher would have been nice.

I wanted to be a garbage man. Specifically, a black garbage man. (There were no white garbage men in our neighborhood, therefore, I believed you had to be black to be a garbage man.)

I mean, c'mon! You got to ride on the back of a big truck, wearing cool gloves, have a cigar hanging out of your mouth, and use that big smasher thing that crushed the garbage. What kid wouldn't want to do that?

From the age of 9 I wanted to be a doctor. I told my father and he told me that I couldn't; only men were doctors. Guess what Dad...I became a Medic on a rescue squad!
