When Is the Last Time You Had a Vacation

Not counting work-related travel and the occasional, more-or-less obligatory family visit, that would have been. ah . . . 2003. We spent a couple of weeks knocking around Scotland. I traveled enough during my working years that travel doesn't hold much appeal for me now.

Well, it's been quite a while since I had a proper vacation. I think about five years ago. Nowadays, you can usually find me cozied up at home, reading a book, tending to my garden, and reading articles. Actually, earlier I came across an intriguing article about Chile Tourism Statistics 2023: The Ultimate Guide Maybe it's time for this old man to pack his bags and set off on an adventure, or if someone can recommend a good book that's much cheaper. Cheers!

i go monthly about 300 miles away and stay a few days with daughters family but i do not count that as vacation
I did go across the country to visit son and daughter in law for a week in April this year

So actual question is when was the last time one slept in a bed away from home that was also not work related?

August 24 thru 27 spent 2 days on a photography road trip in Yosemite high country then 2 days with a couple brothers at a national forest riverside campground and fishing. I am out doing such things regularly and during winters, weekly for a day or 2 usually after driving 220 miles to Tahoe for resort snow skiing, will overnight in lodging. I've never ever taken a paid packaged vacation nor have an interest in doing such.

Drove up to The Yukon in 2021 due the "exciting" Covid days.
Drove up to The Yukon and Alaska in 2022.
Spent 2 full months traveling Cuba from one end of the island to the other at the beginning of 2023.
Heading for Washington, DC next week.

Last holiday was in September when we went to Lisbon (Portugal) for out anniversary. Previous to that it was to the Netherlands in spring.
In between we had a number of breaks touring Scotland in our campervan, and a family holiday in the Lake District. Next holiday will be in December when we go to Germany for the Christmas markets in the Rhine side towns. So, all in all, about 10 vacations a year.

2005, we did several national parks in the US Southwest. Now it would be way too complicated to go even on an overnight trip.

I just came back from vacation this past Monday. I stayed at our Atlantic City timeshare for 3 nights. It was an impromptu trip because the forecast was so great. A couple of days between mid and high 70's. I thought..don't know when we'll see that again. Sure enough, this week we're having a cold snap. Seeing the ocean as I walk the boardwalk and being in my suite where I'm able to look out at the ocean makes me very happy and spiritual.

As much as I don’t like leaving town, I think I could enjoy may a 7-10 day getaway. Where would I go? That’s another question I need to think about. I don’t like cold weather, so maybe Southern California, Florida or Georgia.

We prefer festivals than sunbed holidays. Check out The Goodwood Revival and see lots of people who dress much like ourselves. Then click onto Twinwood. I won't bore you with anymore links but we go to a few other festivals like, The Nostalgia Show. Festival of Vintage. Salute to the 40's. Vintage for Victory. Vintage by the Sea. Southbourne's Shake and Stir. Retrofest and we love going to the heritage steam train weekend GCR.

Just got back from 10 days in Maui. Like @OneEyedDiva, the ocean speaks to my soul and calms my being. Photo below was the view from our VRBO condo balcony.

DH & I go on 4-5 RV vacations a year - the presence of a 5th wheel in the driveway is a great reminder to actually use it. We often go for short trips (4-7 days) to San Diego or up the CA coast. Pre-pandemic we took annual springtime RV trips to AZ to watch (ML Baseball) spring training for a few days, then continued on to New Mexico to visit a friend.

June/July 2014. We flew from Florida to Gatewick, went to Stonehenge for Summer Solstice, had a lovely dinner on one of the barges on the river Thames, etc. Did all the other usual touristy things. She did manage to find the "Diamond District" in London. Took the chunnel to Paris for a week, had dinner at the Eiffel Tower, did all the other usual touristy things. Flew from DeGaulle back to Florida. I had been to UK/Paris several times before, but this was my wife's first (and last) trip. She was diagnosed with cancer the year before, and passed away in March 2016 while we lived in Hawaii.

You've directed us to a festival that honors something that's a lode-star principle for me: "a celebration of craftsmanship and sustainability, from an age when possessions were made to last and be cherished". I have some tools that could be described that way, some of them hand tools, some electrically powered. One is a kitchen tool, an ice-cream scoop probably made between 1935 & 1940.

We’re always going somewhere. 😂

We’ve taken several vacations this year. Working back:

Last month we flew to California for a week to celebrate my son’s 50th birthday!

In August we drove to Minnesota for 7 days for Ron’s nephew’s wedding

July we flew to upstate New York for 5 days to attend niece’s High School graduation.

In April we vacationed in Watercolor Florida for a week for my birthday.

For New Years we stayed at our favorite Airbnb for a couple days.

We may squeeze in one more quick getaway before the end of the year, likely right after Thanksgiving. We’ve been taking about it, but from Thanksgiving to the new year is my busiest work time of the year so it may not happen.

This past spring, we made our annual trek to Lancaster County, PA. Visted a few historical sites, a wolf sanctuary, Sight and Sound theater and a couple of great farmers markets. We stayed at an Airbnb this year and it just so happened there was a trail behind us that the Amish kids used to get to school. Just a beautiful area.
