When it rains…….

Oh no! @Ronni
Is your heat out? :(

I hate it when my power goes off, especially during the winter!
Yea ma’am. Guess my post was a bit ambiguous. I should fix that. Our unit crapped out!

Honestly, it lasted a lot longer than we thought it would. Ron’s been babying it along for the last three years, and we intended to replace it this spring. It just decided to die sooner.

That's one of my biggest fears - no heat. I'm cold when it's below 85.
A couple of years ago, the power was out in my area for 4 hours.
I was so cold I wasn't thinking clearly. I got out a space heater & I was halfway up the stairs when I realized.................

Well you could have run the microwave to heat a beverage to warm you up. 😉

(yes I’ve tried that very thing when the power has gone out!! 🤦🏼‍♀️)

oh my ...I always worry about dangerous weather events and things breaking....we'd build a big fire inside...but gotta have furnace for whole house...geez..I pray you're warm soon and also those workers who came in the freezing cold...plus...found a new unit

A few years ago my units were needing to be replaced and I was putting it off because of the cost. Finally I got estimates from 4 different companies. I called my A/C friend in Center, Texas to ask which bid to accept. I had been keeping his books for years so I knew he would tell me which was the best. I was surprised to hear him say "none". He said he would be down and do it if I sent him pics of both units. So my daughter came and took pics and we emailed them to him. He came the next week, replaced both units, spent the night and charged me $3200.00. My bids were from $3900.00 to $10400.00. So nice to be warm in the cold and cool in the hot weather. I will never put off something like that again since you never know what the weather will do here in Houston. We go back 30 years as friends but I did not expect him to do that for me.

Well, you can't use a microwave appliance, during a power outage; o_O:unsure:
You'd have to get one of those stand-alone items, instead,
that the smart college students use in a dorm room, for a hot plate or cup of noodles or soup. :geek:

:cool::giggle:

Ron’s connections in the industry meant we got Chris and his worker and a new unit pronto!

It sucked for everyone that the temperature was only in the teens. But I kept bringing Chris and his worker Inside for hot coffee around the space heater, and we all managed.

We discovered an issue with the new unit though which is annoying. I have no idea what it is, but the end result is that it won’t run the heat unless it’s on ‘emergency heat’.

Chris is coming out again this morning to figure out what’s wrong. Regardless we had heat last night and we’re staying warm, and I’m grateful Chris is giving up his Sunday morning to diagnose the problem!

No heat when the temps drip is really scary to me now.... since last February (2021)
After over 240 people died in Texas when it got into the 20s for a few days here .... All power was out for 44 hours in my area.
I had no way to heat anything.

I really didn't get scared until it was are over with, and I had time to think about what happened.

About 20 years ago, we had a bad ice storm that lingered for a few days. We were without power for 5 days. Because of all the fallen trees, roads were impassable, plus huge limbs were still crashing down. The shelter wouldn't take pets, and I had 3 cats. So, I kept the place semi-warm with tons of candles, and a gas oven. I have a well, - no water. I can understand how no heat on an icy day ruins everything.. And you do dumb things. Like trying to turn on your computer to see when the power will be back on.

Bad as that was, here's a nightmare that's even worse. It happened to hundreds of people last week, and was all over the newspapers and news broadcasts.

There was a huge snowstorm in the D.C. area, and highway I-95 in VA got backed up for over 24 hours. The snow couldn't be cleared because of several jackknifed trailer trucks and accidents, and people were stuck in their cars, freezing, many without food, with medical issues, without their medication, with screaming infants and chiildren, with their gas and batteries running low, etc. One senator who was on his way to the capitol to try to do something about this got stuck himself in the mess,

Some people did try to help each other, but most of them were just stuck there, with their engines turned off to try to conserve the gas, utterly miserable.

What would have happened if someone had a heart attack, or started delivering a baby? Sounds like a horror movie scenario, but it really happened.

That sure has seemed like it must be an awful situation, there, @Sunny

It's easy for me to picture that, having lived in the North and snow/ice areas, for most of my life.
But that was very extreme and dreadful for the people in that.
