When was our last "Justifiable" war?

AZ Jim

R.I.P. With Us In Spirit Only
We feel certain wars had to be, but which war was the last one that fit that bill for you? For me, it was WW2. We HAD to go to war for our European allies and we had to go after the Japanese. How about you?

I sometimes think that even WWII was more "political" than necessary. During that time period, the entire world was immersed in the aftermath of the Great Depression. What better way to spur the economy, and create jobs, than to engage in a massive war????

But that ignores the fact that Hitler was raising hell all over Europe. He had more on his mind than his economy. We couldn't let that continue.

We HAD to go to war (WWII). We couldn't just sit back and let the Japanese bomb our navy in Hawaii and do nothing about it.
At the same time as long as we're getting into it, we may as well help out the Europeans with the Nazis taking over many countries.

And REMEMBER, with the help of our Allies, we won the damned thing.

Right John and the fact that it did help us out of the depression was just a spin off benefit, not the reason we went where where we did.

I agree on WW2, now Hitler, there was a real axis of evil.

So far we all agree that Korea, Vietnam, the middle East wars were NOT necessary for us to engage in.

After WWII the U.S. psyche was 'pumped' to be do-gooders in Korea and Vietnam but it just didn't work out. The Iraq wars were far more business motivated, as I see it.

No wonder they call Korea the Forgotten War. I was there in 1953 and sure haven't forgotten it, and in my opinion it was justified. When North Korea crossed over the 38th Parallel, the entire population of South Korea was at risk. The United States wanted to defend the people of South Korea, but their involvement inspired China to send an additional 300,000 soldiers to help North Korea. The capital of Seoul was taken, and without more U.S. troops and weaponry, South Korea would have fallen. The people would have been forced to live under communist rule and we wouldn't have the modern, democratic and productive nation that South Korea is today

Lon a noble cause but why was it who had to enforce that 38th parallel? No, I do not see it as a justification to send drafted Americans there. You could make the same argument for Vietnam, again I say not our war.

Don't forget that the UN was involved in the Korean conflict and that Americans were not the only ones involved. I made a number of Greek, Turk and Aussie friends when I was there.

None of which makes it a justifiable war in my mind. Sorry Lon we have to disagree...

OK---No problem, but I am sure glad that that idiot of a leader in North Korea is not running South Korea. Not every country that we have been in a war situation with has had such a favorable outcome as South Korea. I don't see any of the Middle Eastern countries coming out of a conflict as well.

You understand Lon, I don't mean to diminish your service there. I was two years to young to get drafted but it wasn't long before I was 1A.

In your mind Jim, the Korea was not our war. But for the UN to want several countries to go there and stop the cruel North Korea government from taking over the South Korea became our war. The US was strong in helping to get the UN set up, staffed, a place to operate in New York City/state. Pretty hard to then say stuff it to the UN we so gladly helped to put together. Korea was one of our many large and small wars the UN has prepared for us to help clean up. Iraq was one of those UN wars.

Don't worry Jim, none of your comments bother me. I look at the modern city that Seoul and other South Korean cities have become and compare them with the bombed out devastated mess that I viewed when I was there, comparable to the Berlin & Hiroshima ruins at the end of WW2.Seeing what has become of South Korea and the relationship that the U.S. has with them compared to many other countries makes that episode in U.S. history justifiable IMHO. A visit to South Korea is on my Bucket List.

I was just a 18 year old aircraft instrument tech on F86 Sabre Jets at Kimpo Air Base, Korea and not privy to classified info but the rumor was that we were pulling our jets out and sending them to French Indo China (Viet Nam) to assist the French. Our planes were there less than two weeks and then back to Korea. The following week the French were defeated at Diem Bien Phu and the rest is history. Our involvement with Viet Nam occurred earlier than many realize. What a disaster

In my view, no veteran's service is diminished by a government's questionable motives, or the public’s disapproval. The vets served their country.
