Irwin, I had to read Crime and Punishment for a lit class a few years back. I was amazed at how much time he spent on the neuroticism of the main character. But it was a good read, at least I felt it was at the time.I'm reading some classic Russian literature, which is a first for me... Dostoevsky's Crime and Punishment. Some of his characters crack me up.
Also, I'll be making fried mozzarella chips this evening for the game... another first! In keeping with the Russian theme, I'll also be drinking vodka.
Sorry to hear about your loss, Gaer. My husband also died a few years back, and instead of sleeping in our bed during that time, for several months I slept on the couch. I couldn't go near the bed for some reason. Too many memories.I've always slept on "my side of the bed" even though my husband died five years ago.
Last week I slept in the middle of the bed and did the "snow angels" move.
Big move for me!
Congratulations! It's not that I did something new, something new was done TO me: I became a grandma and I love this kid so much it's ridiculous. He changed my life just by being born.
I had a weighted blanket but for me, I didn't enjoy it. I think that may have been though because I bought one that was too heavy. I hope that you enjoy it. It is a different experience! All the time, I mean every week I usually go visit somewhere new, or actually start a new project... it's a big passion of mine to always find something new to do no matter how small..
Today my very small new thing will be to try out a weighted blanket for the first time on my bed...
I used self-checkout every now and then, before my move but I never really liked it because I felt like I was working for the store. But sometimes, especially if the regular lines were long, it was convenient, at times. I'd often feign ignorance and ask the clerk monitoring the area if they would scan my items for me. They always did so. And don't think that your accomplishment is any less than anyone else's. It gave you a boost in confidence, it sounds like, so I'd say that that's a pretty big deal! Thanks for sharing that.A few months ago, after avoiding the self-checkout like the plague, I decided to dive in and give it a try. I had a big order that I had to divide in two as well. I found the experience uplifting and now use self-checkout all the time in every store. Not as spectacular as Chris P. Bacon's something new, but listen, it's been a long while since I stepped out of my rut.
It really is a nice feeling. Thanks, Gaer! This, THIS! Wo-o-o-o! You have to shake up your life once in a while! To rid of possessions is to free the soul.
But, WOW!
That's quite a first thing to do! Tell us though, how much money does the Tooth Fairy leave, for a 75 year old tooth? The only thing that I can think of, being a first time, is a tooth extraction. Fifty odd years ago, three things happened that probably gave my teeth the longevity that they have had. I quit smoking, I also quit sugar in hot drinks and fluoride had been added to our drinking water, all of which gave me a strong healthy set of teeth almost for life. Almost? I cracked a tooth, split it, gnawing on a bone. The dentist couldn't save it, so, at 75 years old, I had my first ever tooth extraction. Did it hurt, or what?
I'd love to ride a snowmobile! That sounds awesome!About 2 yrs ago we went on a trip with friends to the Pocono's. There was a lot of snow. Some of my friends rented snowmobiles and so did I, even though I don't know how to drive. Take a guess who was the first one arriving at the destination!
I thought that I didn't like beets, for most all of my life. I guess it was something that I was served as a child and decided from that day on, that beets weren't for me. I don't think that I've ever tried them roasted but I have a friend in Australia, that I visited a few years back and it seems that beetroot, as they call it there, is kind of a staple food item. Even at Hungry Jack's (Burger King here), they put it on the burgers. So anyhow, in a pub one day, I ordered a burger and my friend suggested that I try it with beetroot. It wasn't bad at all. On my sandwich was fresh but they also had me try tinned beetroot as well. I won't say that I'm a fan now but roasted food sounds delicious. thanks for the happy reminder.A small thing but it was the first time for me. 2 days ago I roasted fresh beets!
I've hit a few bumps in the road but all in all, it's been a good experience, so far. When was the last time that you did something for the first time?
Usually, I make a mess of things the first time I do it, so I make it the last time I do it too.![]()
Oh yes, I'm enjoying myself immensely so! And I was only "technically" homeless. I stayed in a Holiday inn for a few days before I flew down here. But I did try to time things so that my house was sold at the last minute. The place I sold my car to, actually picked it up from the hotel that I was staying in. It;s truly been an adventure so far but a nice one. And I do keep in touch with my family at home along with several friends. Thank goodness for the internet or I'd never be able to afford those long distance phone bills.Chris, I am amazed at your courage to do what you did! I have "thought" of doing something similar but I didn't want to leave family and friends behind. Not that I was afraid of what I would find, but because I don't want to burn bridges that I spent all my life building. To visit a place for a few months is one thing, but to leave everything and everyone behind is another. Are you enjoying yourself? Do you have a support system? How did you end up being homeless?
I am the opposite. I nail it the first time but after that it is all down hill. About the time I get good at it chances are I'll never have to do it again....When was the last time that you did something for the first time?

That's an experience that I haven't had yet but I do have a daughter and a son, so, it may happen eventually, one just never knows. But congratulations, I'm happy for your new arrival! It's not that I did something new, something new was done TO me: I became a grandma and I love this kid so much it's ridiculous. Isn'tit amazing at just how fast those little cards fill up? And I brought a few portable harddrives, full of "stuff" with me. I had a GoPro camera that takes great pictures and video, for which I also bought a 128GB card for but I never used it much. I gave it to my daughter. She also inherited all of the photo albums I had as well. I like looking at pictures but I'm not much of a picture taker myself. My needs will be met by my trusty iPhone for now, I think. The new thing I did the other day is buy a Sandisk memory card that was 64 Gb for my Canon camera so I can take more pictures in it. The camera came with a 4 Gb Sandisk that kept filling up quickly and I couldn't take the photos I wanted to. So I'm happy with the change. I also bought an external hard drive to back up my files. The other new thing was coming on to SeniorForums and becoming a member. Glad I did. So many different people and ideas coming at me all at once. Love it!
It seems like all those burger chains are coming up with their own twist on Veggie Burgers. I haven't tried one yet but today isn't over!I thought and thought and the only thing I could come up with is a week ago I tried the "impossible burger" at Burger King for the first time. It was pretty good once I got past the flame broiled taste which seemed to be mostly around the edges.
I like watching those Life Hacks videos on YouTube, looking for different ways to do everyday things. I tell others that it's because I want to be more efficient but the truth is, I'm lazy, basicall and I want to have more time for fun. Thanks for the music too, I'll give it a listen in just a bit! Can't recall exactly but i'm always looking for new more efficient ways to do things that are essentially necessary maintenance work (on house,my body or my mind, habits), to free up time for reading, chatting online, trying new recipes, walking around my property. i frequently listen to music by people i've just heard of, younger generation stuff. Love Pink's 'Raise a Glass' -- this would have been an anthem for High School me and my friends if it had existed back then. My daughter loved the show 'Glee' and i never got into it---but i spent an afternoon into evening once listening to their covers of some my favorite music. And Kelly Clarkson's Beautiful Disaster covers my love life well right down to my rescuer tendencies.
Good for you! It hasn't been all that long since I got my first iPhone either. It didn't seem like a necessity really, until after I'd been using it a while. I find it especially useful here for navigating the buses and it also helps me to figure out where I'm at and where I'm going to. It's amazing the things that a smart phone can do!Since 2009, I had a flip phone. So a week ago, I got a iPhone13. I used to think it was pretentious when I heard people ask Siri stuff. But I got to try it out. I like the guy's voice best, so Siri is a "him". But like an idiot, after I ask something, and he answers, I automatically say, "Thank you". I'm amazed at the technology in my little black box, my first iPhone.
