How expensive hotels and food were. I had a contract on the Big Island for a short time, and wow it can be expensive.

I recall driving up into the hills and at how the weather changed dramatically as you went up........ I was there to work on a system that kept going down (computer server). Turned out to be a humidity issue.

The film which is my favourite from Elvis Presley, Blue Hawaii and the series Hawaii 5.0 with the (vampire actor in Moonlight series) absolutely yummy Alex O'Loughlin.

But the volcanoes and the distance make it that I'll never go only via YouTube!😂

#14 Other = EXPENSIVE! Too expensive even for state citizens. I worked with a Hawaiian full blooded native who then lived in California. He told me that normally citizens spend their holidays at home rather than going out to dinner, dancing, drinking, clubbing, or for a drive simply because only the tourists can afford the prices. This 'tourist' would be living on the beach while trying to figure out how to pay to get back home. LOL

Memories of living there way back when...the smell of gardenias, rides in a jeep to Koko Head and Diamond Head, sugar cane, going to downtown Honolulu every other Saturday with my dad when he went to voice lessons (my older brother went the Saturdays in between), milk and meat rationing (we had powdered milk, powdered eggs and 🤢Spam🤢, a lot of Spam), bath houses in between every two rows of quonset huts. We lived in a quonset hut, no indoor plumbing just showers, toilets, laundry tubs in the bath houses. We carried water in buckets from the bath house to the kitchen, gigging crawdads in the creek at the park.

Memories.

I lived in Hawaii (Big Island) for almost 3 years. All those things on the OP's list are good (although they are Hula dancers, not belly dancers..). Shoulda never left, but I do hope to go back in a couple of years, albeit in a different form, and spend eternity at the Punalu'u Black Sand Beach, along with the honu (green sea turtles).

Mahalo!

The first thing that comes to mind is I need to book Hawaii for Spring Break. I lived on the Big Island, Kailua Kong for about five years back in the mid 90's. My wife has never been, so we are planning our trip for Spring Break when she is out of school. We will probably stay at Marine Base Kaneohe Bay. I served a number of years and the price is right...

The Napali Coast in Kwai comes to mind imediately when I think of Hawaii.
Cruising by boat along the Napali Coast offers stunning views everywhere. Awe inspiring mountains covered in lush vegetation, beautiful, secluded beaches disappearing into a crystal clear ocean. One of the most scenic places on earth!

My daughter had to go to Hawaii for her job a few years back, and she took me along……… it was the best time of my whole life ! The warm weather , beautiful flowers and greenery, and the people were all SO friendly there.
Each day, I took the bus and rode one of the routes, so I got to see a different part of Waikiki each day, and I would have loved to just stay there and live forever.

The busses looked like they were from the 1960’s, and were open on the side, and easy to see out of and take pictures. This is my bus stopped just outside of the Diamond Head crater. The bus driver was feeding the pigeons while he waited for people to take pictures.
