When you need things done/fixed around your house, what services do you use and why?

My husband, because he Can.. :giggle: ..electrics, building work, plumbing , decorating , car maintenance and repairs , computer repairs etc .....

I 'm not incapable myself of doing a few things like painting and decorating , basic car maintenance , etc...but I wouldn't be able to do much with electricity or plumbing.

I used to be my,own one man maintenance crew. But, I'm in a wheelchair, now. I use a firm, which has plumbers, electricians, etc. It costs an arm and a leg. I love it when others tell me to call some handy man, who does great work, and is dirt cheap. You find him in the phone book right next to the unicorns.

My oldest son. He's gifted. If he doesn't know how to do it nobody else does his time is limited though. I've had professionals in who did a lousy job and wound up fixing things myself. Just didn't get what I paid for. One guy, who didn't advertise but did it as a side job, knew his business on roofing. Could tell when he came, he had all his materials stacked neatly according to what he'd need and when. Got what I paid for that time. However, now that my garage needs a new roof, I'm having the neighbor across the street do it. Can't afford professional work anymore. Had another neighbor and his friend put in a new bathroom floor once. They did a good job on that too.

My son and I do the repairs, except if it requires heavy equipment. I needed a new water main from the house to the street. I had a guy come and vibrate a new line in-ground. We did the disconnect and reconnect. Then, we had to have the water company come out and inspect the job. Also, this past spring, we had all of the old nursery items removed and replaced. That work was done by a nursery company.

I can do virtually nothing around the house maintenance wise other than cook, clean and laundry. I also can do decorating my husband can do quite a few things but when it comes to the electric and plumbing and large repairs we must hire out, We are still looking for some decent repairman as we have relocated to a new area. So far we haven’t liked what we’ve seen. Some shady characters around this area.

So far, this year. I have had the Sears' dishwasher repair guy here. I need a new one. So I have been using the dish washers. I found at the ends of my arms. The electrician was here to fix a light switch, and some outlets that wouldn't work. Turns out the light switch blew a fuse, but I never checked the fuse panel. He replaced the $4.97 light switch and clicked the switch in the fuse panel-total cost $197.00 .I had a new roof put on my 30 year old home. The Sears washing machine repair guy was here, I needed a new filter. The furnace repair guy left yesterday, I needed a new thermocouple. And they are coming into 2 weeks to replace some windows, which outlived their ability to keep out the cold. And did I tell you about the front door that needs replacing.

Well, if anyone is in the Northwest Harris county or Magnolia/ Montgomery county/ Waller county region, I could sure give you solid rehab guys that are wonderful. They buy materials at wholesale and never take a markup on the materials - you just pay what it cost them. Have known these guys for years and they've done everything from plumbing to caulking to putting in a new deck, faux interior painting, tile laying inside and out and on and on. They even moved our business for us a few years ago.

Working around my house with repair problems cropping up became a big problem .... so I sold it!! ... Apartment living is so much easier.
I just call my wonderful Maintenance Manager, and he does everything pronto... love the guy!!
He came over yesterday and put in a new improved thermostat for my A/C unit, and changed out filters while he was here. I didn't even ask.
