When you were home from school sick,

what did your mom do to make it better.
For me, if I had mumps, measles, etc., mom would keep me supplied with comic books, Donald Duck being my favorite.
For an upset stomach, a few crackers, a bit of hot beef broth, milk toast and hot tea.
For constipation, the dreaded warm soapy enigma. God, how I hated those things.

There was no tv available back then, so it was either read, sleep or listen to the radio.

I got to have the kitchen radio in my room; the TV was not a "portable" TV. The radio was a white, plastic Zenith.
Tea and toast after throwing up.
She would read to me from my set of Childcraft books, which I loved. Sometimes other books.
I was never constipated.
She would attach a paper lunch bag to the side of the mattress with a safety pin for used Kleenex.

Gee Pappy, you know I can't remember being sick and missing school, but I know I must have been early on. Never missed any days from 7th grade on.

If you tried to fake being sick in order to stay home from school, my mother would make us go to bed and stay there all day.

That cured me.

When I was home sick from school I remember having homemade eggnog to get some nourishment into me, today it would probably be considered child abuse because of the raw egg in it

I still make it when I don't feel well or at Christmas, these days I add a jigger of booze!

Eggnog for one.
1 egg
1 cup of milk
1 T sugar, a splash of vanilla and a dash of nutmeg.
Whirl in the blender or beat with a hand held mixer until frothy.

Not a lot to be honest.

Aspirin and / or Epsom salts with sugar for most things.

Had the doctor a couple of times for pneumonia and on another occasion tonsillitis and on another occasion a 'quinsy' when a dose of tonsillitis went downhill rather quickly. That was memorable.

My mother used to give me Ginger Ale if I had an upset stomach or nausea. For coughs and sore throat she gave me Cheracol cough syrup and cough drops. She also made me hot tea or chocolate milk with a raw egg in it. She also made chicken soup from scratch for when we were sick, I used to love it. She also rubbed Vicks Vaporub on my chest and under my nose, and used those Vicks inhalers. She mostly made me rest in bed or on the couch, I don't remember too much from back then.

I was sick a lot back them. I suffered from croopy coughs and had to be put in a tent that my family made between my bed and the walls with curtains or bedsheets hanging down to the floor. It was very exotic. Gran would make special treats for me to eat. Dad would comfort me and tell me stories. I had to have a vaporizer to help me breathe. I was too little to read and there was no TV in my tent. I had to recover by strength of will and the love of my family.

SeaBreeze brought back some of my worst memories!

I hated being greased up with Vicks Vaporub and put to bed while it was still light outside, I think going to bed early was more for my mom's benefit than mine, LOL! I seem to recall that my mother even melted Vicks, on a spoon over hot water, and fed it to me when I had a severe sore throat or chest congestion, it's a wonder I survived, LOL!

When I was 7, I got sick and ran a really high fever. Dr. Goodman ( why do I remember his name?) came to the house with his black bag. I wonder if doctors even have black bags now.

My Mom rubbed mentholatum on us and stuck it up our nose.

Don

My Mom would make me egg nog also. I'm pretty sure she made it the same as Aunt Bea's mom. Also cinnamon toast. We had a very old Vicks vaporizer that perked away all night long. Vicks Vaporub was smeared on my chest with a clean piece of my Dads old undershirt pinned under the front of my flannel PJ's. Slippers were put on the radiator to keep them warm for when I got out of bed. She always had a bottle of cough syrup on hand. It was called REM. I don't remember if there was a period between the letters or what it stood for but it was great tasting stuff. If I felt well enough to get out of bed and sit at the kitchen table we played board games in the afternoons. My favorite was Chutes and Ladders. My Grandma lived next door to us. Sometimes she would come over and bring her cards and we would play Old Maid. I really enjoyed those sick days because I hated school so much.

Good memories when off sick. I would get to watch telly shows like Captain Kangaroo, Mr. Dress up and The Friendly Giant. I to had vapor rub all over lol and mum would make me dippy eggs with soldiers of buttered bread and if we couldn't keep things down it was ginger ale or ginger beer..If we got hurt like a cut it was either straight dettol on the cut or iodine. Look I am still here lol goodness I bet that would be child abuse o_O now.

I had bad earaches when I was sick with a cold. We lived about two miles out of town and Dr. Jacoby would come up in the evening to treat me. Always a shot of penicillin and big old sulfa tablets to take. Within two days I was back to normal.

Just the opposite here, Nancy. I looked for ways to skip school.

One day when I was about 9, I concocted a fantastic scheme to get out of school. We lived in the Southwest where yucca plants were common so I cut off one of the sharp-tipped leaves and used it to poke my skin multiple times, even had a buddy do my back. After recess, I showed my rash to the teacher who promptly called the school nurse. Nurse decided it was probably chicken pox and extremely contagious so she exiled me to my school bus for the rest of the day. When I finally got home, after spending all afternoon alone on the school bus, my mother put me to bed and made me stay there all the next day, no fun at all! :D
