When you were little, and sick.

Whats that?
A hot toddy, is a soothing hot drink often looked upon to provide a sense of relief when sick.

Traditionally, it consists of the following.

  • 2 tbsp rum
  • 1 tbsp maple syrup
  • 1 slice of lemon and a squeeze of lemon juice
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • Boiling water

The hot toddy I make is simply hot tea with honey and a small amount of rum or whatever alcohol works for you. The rum will make you sweat like a mother.

Amazing how stupid some parents can be.
My mom would use the opportunity to play the "I told you so....next time maybe you'll listen to me" game.
Whatever I did that she told me not to do was (in her mind) the cause of my cold.
"I told you not to go outside when it was cold."
"I told you not to go outside after your shower when your hair was wet."
"I told you not to play with that friend I don't like."
"I told you not to go swimming right after lunch."
"I told you not to pet other people's pets."
"I told you not to invite that kid to your birthday party."
"I told you not to eat candy."

Aspirin, a couple of drops of niter on a spoonful of water for a fever, wrapped up and sweat it out. Vicks was a must for any sign of cough or congestion. Tepid bath and if fever did not drop rather quickly, then my uncle who was a doctor would come over. Chicken noodle soup from a neighbor of the Jewish persuasion across the street which was delicious and nutritious was also a must. Got better quickly.

As an adult, my mother was always trying to get my husband and I to quit smoking. She started blaming everything bad that happened to us on smoking.
Got a flat tire, "You know why you got that flat tire, don't you? It's because you smoke."
Got laid off from work, "You know why you got laid off, don't you? It's because you smoke."
Lost your keys, "You know why you lost your keys, don't you? It's because you smoke."
And so on, and so on.......
