Where did we get away from having things repaired?

Even if you know how to fix something, finding the parts can be impossible.

My husband tries to fix everything, usually successfully. Not with the coffee maker today. Just out of warranty.

He came from a home where things were repaired. His sons wouldn’t have a clue because he didn’t teach them. Why, because they had no interest.

This is true. In our condo unit, we have a stacked washer and dryer. Before this one, I used to repair the one that came with the unit myself until I couldn't get the parts anymore, and then we had to replace it.

It seems to me that consumer technology leaves a HUGE trail of throw-away items that become obsolete long before they otherwise quit working. TVs, computers, cell phones, etc. The irony of this to me is that in my engineering career, most of the folks I worked with seemed very ecologically aware, at least that was the talk. Yet, they were completely unaware of the huge trail of throw away stuff left behind them as they went for the latest computers, cell phones, and other gadgets even if what they had was only 2 or 3 years old.

When I was working, one time I saw a desk roll-chair in the hallway outside the secretaries office. We used to put large items out in the hallway for the night crew to dispose. Looked perfectly good to me. I sat in it and it was nice and comfortable. The only thing I saw was that it has a coffee stain about 2 inches in diameter on one arm. I took it and used that chair until I was transferred to another department. Imaging they were throwing away a whole chair because it had a small stain on the upholstery! People are so wasteful.
