A buddy and I went to see Psycho at a grand old classic first run theater in downtown Pittsburgh soon after it opened (Sept. 1960). There had been a lot of scuttlebutt about it, and Hitchcock himself had put out a widely seen trailer in promotion.
Despite it being a matinee, the theater was fairly well attended. What I'll never forget was that there were 3 uniformed sailors sitting 2 rows in front of us. When the shock of Bates ripping open the shower curtain with the knife at the beginning of the famous shower scene, all of the sailors screamed like grade school girls! They had a nearly similar reaction when Abogast was attacked on the staircase. Later I wondered about the U.S. Navy...
Do you remember where you first saw Psycho?
