Where is the happy middle in prevention vs when an item appears?

Last weekend watched show on TV and saw many many promo ads for medical type shows .....
Dr pimple popper/ My feet are killing me show or some of the overweight surgery shows.

I look at some of these folks on shows who have golf ball size or softball size growths or are 800 lbs and testimonials of how these items effect their lives but they waited this long why? Some claim no other doctor helped them but i find this hard to buy.
None of these TV Doctors......... are so specialized that another doctor could not do same treatment shown on show ......
Yet these folks who go to great lengths to hide growths or live in pain and Travel from many states away ..... to see TV doctors ... perhaps just to be on TV.

I also walk with some ladies,
One of whom took a list of medical "preventive" tests for her insurance company to send her a $25 gift card to a drugstore.....
I do not want to be probed or take many perhaps unneeded tests for a gift card. Time and effort for all these appointments
Honestly all her co-pays for tests added up to more then her "reward"

.....but i also would not wait on some item that was causing issues in my life...
have seen or heard of people who waited too long .... and limited options or even treatments for serious diagnosis.
Where is your middle road....do you go if there is an issue or go on a schedule just in case?

My tendency used to be to put things off, unless whatever was going on had scared me. Then I decided to quit messing around on the more unimportant things, wait a bit to see if the situation resolved itself, and then go to the doctor. By a bit, I mean a few days.

I didn't have health insurance once, but I did have a cyst on my back that was about 1.5" in diameter and looked like a round ball. This was not an emergency of any kind. Knowing it was there really bugged me. So I went on Youtube and looked up how to remove a cyst.

I watched several videos, including those of Dr Pimple Popper (which were very good), and did it myself with the aid of a mirror, a razor blade, and tweezers. I removed the entire cyst, outside covering and all. Everything I used was sterile. A couple of months later I was at the doctor. He charges $50/visit to patients who don't have insurance, but were patients when they were insured.

I told him about the cyst removal and he was shocked. He checked it out, and everything was great. I asked him if I could have a few disposable scalpels, and he said no! Luckily, I've not need a scalpel since then.

The cyst never came back, which means I did the removal correctly.

Youtube works and old books are even better for general and specific information .

Start reading 'old' preventions. Much that works, much wisdom, much freedom from modern profitmaking.

"I love these old books! They are so much better then most of the new ones. The information is very easy to read and is very honest in its presentation, which is unlike more current books. Also, I have found that most of todays information is based on the information from that era anyway , so why not read the original. I have found that new and improved is not usually better."

"Value this book, for what it really is, instead it condemning it for what it is not. Amazing Medicines offers valuable insight into the causes and known cures of certain diseases, which have been overlooked in favor of lucrative treatment modalities, which merely alleviate symptoms in conformity with the current medical business model. I have found this excellent book very useful, and I highly recommend it."
