Where to start for art appraisal.

Has anyone ever had artwork appraised? I purchased a landscape in a little antique shop in Iowa. I believe the artist to be Edit Easton Waltz.. 1873-1964. It's in the original frame. I don't know where to start. Are art appraisal expensive.. AND how do you know who is reputable?

I've bought and sold quite a bit of artwork over the years, and have primarily worked with an art broker I trust, whom I found via a recommendation from a friend who is an artist.

Fine art is worth what someone is willing to pay for it at a given time. You can try some of the online art sites like askart.com to see find out what recent auction prices for a similar work by the same artist sold for. Some of the sites require a subscription to view the auction sales price info. You can also research whether there are any small galleries or websites selling her work to see what the current price is for a similar size.

I found only one piece from this artist that sold at auction. Unfortunately, they want you to PAY them to tell you how much it sold for. There is a dealer and appraiser located not far from here.. they are open today.. I'm taking a little ride to see what they say.
