Which Did You Like.....Golden Girls or Designing Women

Both shows about 4 women but my choice for the better show would be Golden Girls. Who was your favourite character and least fave?

And who could you relate to.....guys, feel free to say the same substituting your wife, mom, partner or sister

I could not stand the character of Mary Jo played by Annie Potts when she went into one of her loud mouth rants, usually about men. I would put my fingers in my ears. Always had a laugh with Delta Burke's Suzanne or Rue McClanahan's Blanche

I relate most to Sophia, down to earth, a storyteller, respect for the old ways and she loved to cook.

Golden Girls..( I never heard of the other show)... but GG has been my favourite show of all time, British, or American... regardless... I can watch repeats of that any day, even tho' I know the scripts off by heart... :giggle:

If I HAD to choose, I'd say Sophia was my favourite character... but without any one of them the show would have had a completely different dynamic which is why the Golden Palace dive-bombed in the ratings without Dorothy ( Bea Arthur)

Holly, I never knew there was a second show and I will definitely look it up and see if it is still on today. Thanks for the tip.

Golden Girls. However, watching that show a lot lately, I found some things I don't like about that show. First is the yelling. Why did they feel they had to hell some of their lines. I see this in a lot of the older shows. Frasier for another one. But the one I disliked most of all is how Dorothy speaks to Rose when rose says something that is disagreeable. As a teacher, I would think that the Dorothy character would have been better if she explained the truth to Rose instead of calling her names and ridiculing what Rose said.

i was very fond of both shows and have rewatched both on streaming. For both show it was the dynamics between the 4 the women that made them good.

Totally agree with @Ceege about how Dorothy reacted to Rose who may not have had a lot of book smarts and was naive--but she was not stupid and supposedly well-educated Dorothy never seemed to consider that Rose's life experience had been the antithesis of her own and that would have shaped Rose's way of being.

@Lee my problem with Mary Jo is that she didn't walk her talk--especially when it came to men but she kind of 'submitted' to both Sugarbakers--giving in to their plans, wants instead of sticking to her guns about things. She'd complain and rant and then let others direct her actions.

On Designing women Charlene was a favorite and the dynamic between Suzanne and Anthony. But i probably relate most to Julia, tho she could over-react at times. i usually try calm reason with folks first, then if they're still being jerks then i go all Julia Sugarbaker on them.

I watched both shows, but my favorite one was Golden Girls. I watched it every week. Everyone on the show was great but I loved Estelle Getty. In one episode they were expecting a storm and Sophie was running around saying "A Hurricanes a coming "now whenever we are having a storm my daughter teases me by yelling "A Hurricanes A coming." Even though Estelle Getty played Bea Arthur's, mother, in real life she was a year younger than Bea.
