Which drink is best for hydration? Hint: It isn’t water

Totally disagree. It definitely is water. Milk is too thick. For me, the best drink to keep me hydrated is water cold water and ice tea. What ever drink quenches my thirst the best, is also the drink that hydrates me the best and the fastest. I put milk in the same category as soda, beer, some juices, don't hydrate me at all. Milk has never done anything for me when I'm either thirsty or dehydrated.

Nah I think water is more hydrating too

and from the linked article: The same (as milk) can be said for oral rehydration solutions that are used to treat diarrhea. Those contain small amounts of sugar, as well as sodium and potassium, which can also help promote water retention in the body.

so, sure, if you are recovering from illness or depleted from nutrients for some reason - things other than water might be better for you in that circumstance.

But in ordinary real life - water is still best.

Water is my go-to beverage for hydration. I drink pomegranate juice (no added sugars or other additives) with my meals. Black coffee in the morning. That's it for liquid refreshment. I absolutely avoid any sugary soft drinks. I'll enjoy two (2) alcoholic drinks if I'm with company in a social situation and the others are imbibing......but that seldom happens for me....the last such occasion was five years ago.

I recently stumbled onto a very tasty satisfying cold beverage, canned Zero Sugar 7Up. Contains no fat, sugar or carbohydrates, but a modest amount of potassium, sodium, and natural flavors. Really like it.

BTW, for those of us Old Pharts who are lactose intolerant, but still like a little milk in our coffee or cereal there are lactose free milk substitutes that do the job and taste great. My own at home favorite is Silk Almond Milk, which has 50% more calcium than dairy milk. Most drink dispensers, like Starbucks will, at request, use Almond Milk in their mochas, etc. From my taste buds, no difference in flavor than conventional milk.

I'll just dehydrate that milk straight out the other end, idk which demographic they're talking to

Very interesting. Thanks for posting. I add a powder called Liquid IV to my water every day. It boosts hydration. I love milk. You've given me an excuse to drink more!
I love milk, too. It's always been my favorite drink.

You might remember, I grew up on a dairy. Our milk was homogenized but not yet "fortified", and, tbh, it tasted better. But I still love it, though. My grandmother's ice cream tasted better than what you buy now, too. She made the cream from extremely fresh milk, and used fruit from our trees and berry bushes. In fact, I don't care much for store bought ice cream. It doesn't taste the same at all.

The only milk I've tasted recently that tastes remotely like the milk I remember as a kid is Whole Foods 365 brand Organic Whole Milk. If you have a Whole Foods anywhere near you it is worth it and is cheaper than other store brands.

My father worked for Borden's Dairy in his early years and would literally eat butter or drink sweet cream by itself so I guess I inherited that!

"milk was found to be even more hydrating than plain water because it contains the sugar lactose, some protein and some fat, all of which help to slow the emptying of fluid from the stomach and keep hydration happening over a longer period."

Makes sense to me. When aid volunteers hydrate starving and dehydrated people in, say, Africa, they basically use sugar water, and IV fluids contain glucose.

Gramps' cows were Borden, too! But Crystal took over our area in about 1962 or 63.

I enjoy a glass of ice cold milk but I’m not convinced that it was ever intended for human consumption.

When I’m thirsty I drink tap water with ice made from tap water.
