Which state is best to retire in

There are many great states to retire in but I would consider natural disasters these days before anything else. We thought we wanted to move to Western North Carolina but after Helene wiped out whole towns we reconsidered. Florida appeals to many, but with the recent strengthening storms homeowner's insurance is becoming unaffordable. If something wipes out your home it really doesn't matter how nice the area is.
 

Anymore at this stage of life, it's more about the numbers for many, or should be. Cost of what a home is (rent or buy) taxes, utilities, nearest hospital/EMT service, insurances, gasoline or transportation means, real estate/personal taxes, even the costs of driver's license vary as well as registration. We'd all love to live in a climate that is kind to our bodies but it does you no good if you can't buy food and pay utilities. I don't remember putting so much into the idea of moving to another state in such detail as now. I think your financial abilities will definitely end up choosing for most.

I would strongly recommend Texas! Here there is no state income tax and my health insurance is free, also the weather is wonderful. I was born in Wisconsin, brrrrr. May God bless you!

We chose Idaho (from California) 4 years ago. I want to move back, We lived in a very beautiful spot in NorCal for 30 years. Very small rural/resort town on the largest natural lake in California. But mostly I miss the kids,grands and greats. One of our daughters is here and loves it but she lived in a more populated area in CA than we did so larger cities are her thing.

Too much traffic here for me-and more homes being built every day. Not sure where they are going to put all the cars lol. Two stoplights in our old town....

Gas IS cheaper here,about a dollar less a gallon. Electricity is a lot cheaper-hundreds of dollars a month less.And then of course there`s fire insurance, Really unaffordable in CA so that could be our biggest hurdle.

Oh,and then there`s medical care. I get very good care here(stage 4 cancer) that I would have to travel for if we moved back. So that is obviously a huge consideration.

We don't want to move away from the kids either. I imagine things were very nice in NorCal --- I'm down south in the heat, traffic, etc etc etc.... very tired of the "asphalt jungle" ......

What part of Texas? Texas is like six states all in one. ;) Brownsville is totally different than Amarillo and El Paso different than Houston and then there is Hill Country and places like Texarkana.

IMO …. Texas is not a place to come to retire …. the population is growing with younger people - average age is 35.

The growing tech and data centers are bringing in those looking to grow their careers, not end them.

About 20% of the entire state is now over 65, and that number continues to shrink..
