I hear you SeaBreeze and side with Don McLean too but here's what drove me to sit on the fence with the two:
I saw the film "Loving Vincent" last night and the story was so sad as we all know. So at the end, when Lianne La Havas sang "Starry Starry Night", her voice was hauntingly sad and yet beautiful at the same time which matched Van Gogh's life and the viewers feelings to a tee.
Don McLean deserves to win since he wrote it and sang it so well too, but his tempo is slightly more upbeat and wouldn't have sounded quite as appropriate for the life story portrayed in the movie that left the viewer more of a deep mourning for the loss of this loved one...especially at the end while the credits are rolling and you're wiping away the tears.
