Who Knew? Some Fun Facts

Ditch those Ties Guys!
  1. Wearing a tie can reduce blood flow to the brain by 7.5 per cent. A study in 2018 found that wearing a necktie can reduce the blood flow to your brain by up to 7.5 per cent, which can make you feel dizzy, nauseous and cause headaches. They can also increase the pressure in your eyes if on too tight and are great at carrying germs.

I didn't know this. The stuff I learn from Facebook.
John D. Rockefeller was a ruthless businessman man from his earliest years He was also well known to be extremely generous to charities, including tithing to his church at age 16. He retired from working at 58 and spent the last 40 years of his near 98 year life administering his foundations.

After searching for ten minutes, I can find no corroborating evidence or story anywhere supporting this Facebook story about an illness being the catalyst for the establishment of his foundations.

(What I learned from Facebook is that most stories like these are BS, which is why I check them out.)

Ah. Next time I'll first check them.

Based on historical accounts, it is true that John D. Rockefeller suffered a severe health crisis in his early 50s (around 1891–1892) that forced him to retire from active business, after which he became one of the most prolific philanthropists in history.

However, the dramatic popular story that doctors gave him a "death sentence" and he immediately became healthy upon giving away money is partially sensationalized, though it holds a core of truth about his transformation.

The True Story (Historical Context)
The Health Crisis: Around 1891–1892, at age 53, Rockefeller suffered a partial nervous breakdown from intense overwork and stress. He lost his hair, eyebrows, and mustache, and was deeply unhappy despite his vast fortune.
Retirement: Under doctor's orders, he stopped actively managing Standard Oil around this time and focused on health and charity.
Philanthropy Expansion: While Rockefeller had always been a donor, his philanthropy became organized and extensive after his retirement, culminating in the creation of the Rockefeller Foundation in 1913.
Long Life: He did live to be 97, far outliving the initial panic about his health in the 1890s.

The Sensationalized Version (Social Media/Viral Story)
Viral stories often claim:
Doctors said he would die in 12 months.
He had an "epiphany" and immediately started giving his money away.
His hair grew back, and he started sleeping again because he gave money away.
Why it is slightly exaggerated: While he did change his outlook and his health improved, the "miraculous immediate recovery" is a dramatic retelling of his slow retirement and move toward philanthropy. However, it is documented that he became a much calmer, happier, and more generous person in his later years.

Generating genuine random numbers is important in computer security for doing encryption. They have to be totally random and doing that is harder than you might imagine. Cloudflare, one of the largest internet companies in the world uses a wall of lava lamps where it takes a photo of them and then by using the the numerical representation of each pixel in the photo generates a number which is truly random. The photo is always different, it never repeats.

That explains some of the Limburger coming out of Congress...:cautious:

  1. Your brain is constantly eating itself. This process is called phagocytosis, where cells envelop and consume smaller cells or molecules to remove them from the system. Don’t worry! Phagocytosis isn't harmful, but actually helps preserve your grey matter.
Well, I wish that old phago whatsisname would have a banquet on all my dud grey cells to make room for the few good ones that still work. 😊

True fact: AI is constantly creating new true facts out of thin air or inflating true facts. It's a form of social engineering that can be used by scammers on social media looking for people who will act quickly on data without analysis. The basis of the "work" (or scam) is that the "mark" (the victim) will follow along without skepticism.
So when someone on FB posts a meme that says the moon will be so close to the Earth on May 22 that you will be able to drive on it, I'm skeptical.
