Who Lies to their Doctor More Men or Women

My Husband hates when I go to the Doctor's with him. He says I tell the Doctor too much about his health. Lately he either goes alone or if needed he will ask Our Grandson to drive him. He has had a lot of medical issues lately and I'm sure he doesn't tell the Doctor everything. Today we had an appointment with our Primary Doctor at the same time. We weren't there 10 minutes when I had to speak up and tell the Doctor about my Husbands visit to the Urologist. My husband gave me a look that could kill. Then he had to discuss the matter with the Doctor. Needless to say we were home for an hour before he started talking to me again. So because of my husband I believe Men lie more to Doctor's than Women do.

Well, that's really not much of a "statistical sample", but in general men and women end up scoring close in the he vs. she surveys. :)

I hope I don't sound like I'm showing favoritism to women,
but a few years ago I passed a kidney stone and didn't complain, a week later my nephew did the same thing but
he is still complaining !LOL

I don`t know if men really "lie" more-I think they just don`t mention all the details lol.

I think you're right. My Husband hates to mention the pain he has even walking is a problem with his knees and back. I think he feels that if he complains it makes him sound old and not capable of doing what he did when he was a young man.

Bingo!

However, my mom outright lies to her doctor for the same reason; to give the illusion of youthfulness.

You may be right that men arent as good at going to the doctor as women are. And they may not be as open when they do go. I think we tend to moan and suffer out loud more! :)

From a personal point of view, I dont like going to the doctor. I feel that they treat the symptons too much and that simply brings other issues.

I totally agree. And I'd rather talk about underlying causes than treating symptoms.

Hmmn?
There's a big difference between a man passing a kidney stone and a woman passing a kidney stone.

Men don't complain about headaches as much as women if you get my drift.

I accidentally gave my cat a hot pepper and he passed a streetcar.

Actually, the pain of a kidney stone is the same for a man or a woman. And it feels exactly like labor. The nurse in the ER told me that women are just able to handle it better, for that reason, and that I should see how the men who come in with them act. All I know is that kidney stones are extremely painful and I hope to never have another!

It is much easier for a woman to pass a stone due to anatomy. Prostate, length of ureter and diameter.

Whether you're a man or a woman, if you don't tell your doctor EVERYTHING, you're being STUPID !

He/she should be made aware of everything in your medical history in order to make an intelligent diagnosis.

The nurse is lying. She tells you that just in case you might want to have a baby.

Actually pain is different in all people and how they handle it.

Some can tolerate more pain that others. I used to insist that I had my fillings done without freezing because I couldn't stand the thawing out period and chewing on my cheeks.. Some people can take that. Others cant.

I was allergic to the aneasthetic and my heart would take off.

He did change the anaesthetic later. He thought I was nervous about the needle. I wasn't. I watch them put the needle in my arm for blood tests.

Possibly you might have had a problem with the epinephrine in the local anesthetic. For years I had a really bad case of the "shakes" when the anesthesia began to wear off. They stopped including it except for a low percentage inclusion for extractions. Problem solved!
I read somewhere that women in general have a higher pain tolerance (due to pain of childbirth) than most men do.

I make a list of my ills when I go to the doctor, that way I don't forget something.

She doesn't drive anymore, so we always go together.

That's right. He changed to an anaesthetic that didn't have epinephrine in it.

That's the point I try to make with my Husband. I want him to be honest so he gets the best care. Years ago he told me 2 weeks later that he was having double vision. I rushed him to the Hospital and he had had a stroke. The strange thing was he had seen our family Doctor the week before and never mentioned his vision. He worries me that he keeps everything to himself.

I am honest with my doctor, but I sometimes put off going for longer than I should. When I know I should go, that's when I'll mention whatever is bothering me to my wife. Once I tell her, it's only a matter of time before I have an appointment because she won't stop reminding me to get to the doctor.

Last year I had some symptoms that appeared to be cardiac related, chest pain, shortness of breath and fatigue. I kept telling myself it was nothing, but my wife knew something was wrong. Foolishly, I put it off until the following day, but did call the doctor. He told me to go to the ER, where I was admitted and spent the night while they ran a bunch of tests. Thankfully, it was a false alarm, but I got a serious lecture from the triage nurse, then the attending who treated me for ignoring my symptoms. The nurse was pretty blunt, saying that's how people end up dying. Of course, then I heard the same thing from my sister (a nurse). A good learning experience.

I am so happy it wasn't anything serious and that not only that you are okay, but that you learned a very important lesson. Always take care of yourself and regularly visit the Doctor.
