Who owns or uses a cane/walking stick?

I was shopping for walking canes/sticks and two for under $25 each from Amazon. Some were way above my budget, however, the two I found suit me fine. I checked eBay and google shopping, Amazon has the best selection for dicerning gentleman.

I have one that has been passed down from several generations. It is old, and worn, but it does the job. I look like such a bum using it in public and feel so ashamed. I know how much value you place on fitting in with society, so getting the "discerning gentlemen's" cane would be a must.

Have a couple which I don't use anymore. I blame canes for hurting my posture, wouldn't use again, just walk VERY carefully. Don't walk, stroll. Stroll to the beat of the music in my head.

I've had quite a few since breaking my leg 14 years ago. No choice unless I want to lurch from side to side like a drunken sailor. I keep the handle long so I don't slouch.

I buy them from the umbrella stand at the drug counter in Kroger. I've learned to "try them on," because some rattle when you walk and I prefer quiet ones so I can sneak up on people.

Right now I have a purple one with a straight, foam covered handle.

I have a cane left over from the hip surgeries and a stick I have started using outside because the ground is uneven. I think it was supposed to be a new handle for some garden tool decades ago.

Little boy who lives north of me was over one day and I was walking with my stick. He wanted one too so we found a literal stick on the ground and wandered out together to look at the pond.

I just received a new stick from Amazon because I plan to do some walking when I go camping.

Was down in the woods one time cutting away some dead tree's. I had just cut one when it got hung up as it started to fall. Just then, I heard a whooshing sound and "pow", down I go. Seems the top 8-10 ft of the tree broke off and came down on me. Just missed my head and ran down my leg. Crawled to my tractor and got home. Hurt like hell. The next day, I needed a cane. hunted around the yard and found a suitable tree root. Made a cane out of it. While healing, I noticed how it kinda looked like a horse, so, I whittled it down a might and did a little painting.

We accumulated a few canes through the years even though she didn’t think we needed them.
She’s the one that uses one now. Not all of the time but when she has problems.
The one she likes is probably about the cheapest you can find. The metal one that adjusts in length easily by pushing the spring loaded button and moving it to another hole.
It’s very light weight so she can handle it easily.
Most of the time it rides between her seat and the center console on our SUV.

I used a cane for a few years before moving here and getting my walker. I still have it. My son made it from a small tree in our forest. I use it occasionally now, in my apartment only. This is actually the 2nd one he made for me. The first one was stolen when I was at a church for a meeting. I left it at the coat rack and it was gone.

I use my grandfather's cane. He was born in 1864 and died at 95. Have no idea when he started using it . It's "candy cane" shape, black tape on the handle portion and the typical rubber tip. Probably not the cane for a "discerning gentleman" but it gets me from point "A" to point "B" and in my case, that's all that matters.

At 90 I consider myslf lucky to still be walking and driving and I doubt that I'll be doing either for much longer. :(

They can also come in handy for self-defense.
I have had to do that. Years ago, when I first developing walking problems, I used a cane. I was living on the beach in Massachusetts. My town just welcomed families from the Bosnian conflict. Young people from this group began engaging in disruptive behaviors.

Anyway, one day while walking the cement boardwalk, in the distance I saw around six Bosnian kids coming my way. I swear to you, they had a literal cloud of trouble surrounding them. I felt it. I made myself ready.

Sure enough, the one kid on a bike tried to take my cane. As I said, I was ready. I knocked him off his bike by swinging the cane in the spoke of his wheels. These kids were in shock. I waved my cane at them and yelled at them. They were terrified of me, I know how to have that effect on people! They literally ran from me. YAY FOR ME! and my weapon, my cane.

There was an old guy who would sit down at this big dining table at a restaurant where all of the work crews would eat.
He would listen to what one bunch of guys were up to and relay it to the next bunch.
Kind of an old gossiper.
So we decided that we would string him along and the guy ahead of me said that he was looking for a good crop duster to dust his marshmallow field with powdered sugar.
My turn I said I was looking for a crew to run a herd of turtles down to Arkansas.
About that time he caught on that we were pulling his leg and he jumped up swinging his cane and calling me a smart a—.
As I hit the door of the place I realized that you don’t mess with somebody who is carrying a cane.

I use a hiking stick when out exercise walking since the period when I fell down three times in two weeks (nothing hurt but my dignity as I'm good at falling and aim for the grass when I feel myself going down).

I have on occasion used a folding cane on days I feel a little unbalanced but not for a while now as I'm working hard on strengthening my legs. I think the 44-pound weight loss has helped immensely.

I have a walking cane, but really don’t like it at all. (Hurrycane)... only use in my apartmen, and leaving/going out with family.

I use a dog stroller daily to take outside w/Bear, and I tend to use that like a walker, putting the handle up over the top of the stroller
…. works good and I don’t fall, even when going fairly fast.
He’s only in the stroller about 10% of that time. :)

You have to watch canes, they are addictive and accumulate on you. You start with one, then see another that looks pretty good, then one that looks better than the first two, and the next thing you know they start building up and becoming specialized one for pavement, one for gravel, an everyday stick then one for special occasions they're like Lays potato chips you can't have just one.

I've got 3 folding canes... a pink one , a royal blue one, and this emerald green floral one...

I've also got 2 hiking poles....they're better for out in the snow and ice..

None of them get used currently.. but I got them when my lower back collapsed on me and it was agony to walk .. so I have one by my bed head in case my back spasms in the night and it helps me get out of bed .. one in the car and one downstairs in the hall...
