Who would open their door in the dark at 10pm ?

If I was expecting a delivery and knew who it was, yes I would. I am pretty sure that, years ago, a laptop I bought from JL was delivered very late at night and I also remember a courier delivering a parcel at 5am but, it was probably because I had complained that they had not delivered the parcel the day before (as promised) so, someone might have said, "deliver this at the crack of dawn, that will teach her!"

I think you should always follow your gut feeling, if you feel unsafe, keep the door locked or, if you can, speak through the ringbell asking them to leave it on the doorstep, wait until they go and then get the parcel. You live in a rural (to me) area and, alone at night, it is understandable why it should make you feel uncomfortable.

I think it depends on your ability to protect yourself. If you're a 92 year old granny using a walker, maybe not a great idea to open the door. without knowing the person on the other side. If you feel comfortable opening the door, open the door.
I would open the door hatchet in hand. I bought one when I was first living on my own and have always kept it. :giggle:

to accept a delivery ?

I ordered some batteries from Amazon. Just had notice that delivery will be made between 7.45 an 9.45pm.... ! it'll be pitch dark at that time...

if you live alone would you open your door at that time in the dark for a delivery ?
Nope

I dated a gal who kept a rock in a sock under her pillow.

I was staying at her place one night when I woke up and saw her standing next to the bed looking like a naked ninja; her squinting eyes fixed on the bedroom door, leaned back on her right leg, her left arm out in front and her right hand swinging that sock over her head like a freaking copter blade at full torque.

I swear I could almost hear it whhirrr.

"'the f*** are you doing?"

She glanced at me for a moment and hissed, "Shh!" and her eyes shot back to the door with that steely gaze. "I heard a noise!"

whhirrr...whhirrr...whhirrr!

It was the fiercest (yet sexiest) sight I'd ever seen in my life, and I could have just turned and tucked myself back in. I mean, she had this thing handled, man. Whoever was out there was a dead man walking.

But I told copter-girl to just lower the sock and I went and cleared the house.

If some dude was out there, but he heard us and left...that was his lucky night.

The only delivery people who don't just knock and leave are the Fed-Ex people, and they only delver up until about 6pm. I think they all deliver later during the holidays, though.

I'm trying to think if I'd be scared for Michelle if a late delivery came while she was home alone. I don't think so. They always park their clearly-labeled vans right in front of the house, and their uniforms are identical and obvious, so even if she opened the door to accept the delivery personally, as she's one to do, I'd be ok with it.

But I'm going to tell her to always look out our big front window before she opens the door, though. Day or night, it's a good idea. We have porch-pirates who actually follow delivery vans around, park a little ways away when they stop, and go nab the packages after they pull away.

I live in a small terraced house (codgerspace) with the front door opening onto the street. Would I answer the door at night? Only if I was expecting a delivery because I can see the van pull up outside my door. In fact it is dark now and about ten minutes ago I had an Amazon delivery. I don't have any video bell... don't even have a door bell... lol I basically just keep checking Amazon for the latest updates and as soon as the little street map comes up with x number of stops away then I am on 'window watch' and have the door open as soon as the van pulls up outside.

it's very dark here...little street lighting.. and right now its lashing down of rain as well.. so it's be quite difficult to see the logo on any van outside.. or their uniforms.. in fact aside from UPS and Amazon .. no one else wears a uniform... they just wear hi-viz jackets...so that could be anyone..

My neighbor in late October heard an odd noise on his porch ,just as it was getting dark-one late afternoon and he thought it was an amazon delivery but it was The Bear.
We all call it "The" Bear ,where I live, but there are more than one.

(I saw a mother bear and two cubs run across the side of the valley in front of me once. We all think there is a den there not too far from the road.)

His wife took photos of it from the window. "The Bear" broke some of my suet bird feeders years ago and pulled some of my flower soil holders off of my porch. I would fill them in the fall with seeds for the chickadees and blue jays.

Yeah, our bear did the same
around 9pm
tore it up pretty good

Then pulled the sealed lid off the 5 gal bucket of cracked corn
Tipped it over
Then laid on his belly and shoveled 5 gal of cracked corn into his yap

Look a few pics from the cabin window, but had the flash on
so all we got was the bright flash reflecting from the window

Well not in many large urban regions. In this era even day time unannounced visits to residences are uncommon. Door to door salesperson I grew up during, have long been extinct. It is rare to have someone knock on my door during night hours. Obviously there is value at night in having a way to first see who/what is outside a door or at least talk to whomever. Unlike decades ago when we were able to trust others much more, at a minimum today will loudly speak through a door as to who is there? And yes have had a few such suspicious experiences where the knocker explained their visit as the wrong address.

If I had to choose between bringing my delivery in or leaving it to chance, rain, sleet, or snow, I'd open the door. I can't stand the thought of buying stuff for thieves.

Funny thing; 3 pairs of cargo sweat pants I ordered didn't arrive so I notified Amazon. They said wait a few days, and I did. Still no pants, so I called again and they gave me a credit, and I used it to buy 3 pairs of sweat pants without the cargo pockets from a different Amazon partner.

That order arrived in about 4 days. The original order arrived 2 days after that. I didn't report it, which probly makes me as thievy as a porch-pirate, but I chalked it up to "We all have our moments." šŸ˜

That is getting late. I've noted deliveries up to 7-730pm before. Can you see who is at the door? Or can you say "just leave and I'll get it" Wait for them to leave.
