Why are some stores going to all "pick-up" or "delivery"?

How can you practice going if you don't see yourself alone there ?.... sounds like a horrible situation, is there no better store for you... Are you shops all in the same road you live ?

Yeah, I doubt I'll be going. There is a smaller grocery near me, a Turkish store that only has my basics. They are very expensive on some items, too. Thank goodness my son is willing to go through hell for me. He calls the checkout line "The Black Hole" and now I know why.

At the local grocery, they only have one cashier on duty from 6 am (when it opens) until 9 am when the self-checkout opens. This store allows cash at the self-checkout and I prefer using that since I can do my own packing and put things where I want them in the boxes I bring. Some teenage clerk who just wants to get people through the checkout, could throw a #10 can of sweet potatoes on top of the egg carton or a loaf of bread. My mom always said to put the heavy items in first.

Eliminating a choice is not control? I think it is.

There are certain items I always choose myself in the flesh like deli, meats and fish. I like to choose my own produce too preferably and I enjoying having a conversation with staff who package and bag my purchase, how to do that for maximum food protection and satisfaction so nothing goes spilling all over the floor when unpacked.

And, I would miss the social aspect of it. I know the staff where I shop and I would miss seeing and talking to them as they would miss seeing and talking to me. It boosts my morale and I enjoy the positive mental health aspects of shopping in store myself. It's not a deep dark conspiracy theory but I do see a growing trend with technology to separate us from having human contact with one another, and this is important to me.

I agree with much of what you're saying, chic. Except I think the elimination of choice is a byproduct of financial decisions on the part of those who organize and oversee retail and franchise corporations. An increasing proportion of business is following models developed by Amazon and by delivery-pizza companies... profit seems to be rosy for them.

we have it a little different here. From opening to 8am only self service checkouts are open..and Card Only ...equslly from 10pm until closing at midnight ......... in the UK cashiers do not pack for us, we have always had to do our own packing...

Wegman’s has started testing smartcarts that tally up your grocery bill as you shop and allow you to pay with a credit card as you finish and exit the store.

I have a feeling that the technology was probably developed to help the instacart shoppers and now is being rolled out to customers.

I’m a bit skeptical but I’ll try it when I have the opportunity.

I have a feeling that the technology was probably developed to help the instacart shoppers and now is being rolled out to customers.

I’m a bit skeptical but I’ll try it when I have the opportunity.

We've had those for many years ..it's a much smaller than the one in the picture... and many people use them. My husband always preferred to use those.. It works like this...

The''Pricing guns'' are on a display inside the front door, to release one you scan your Debit or Credit card.... then you, scan your own items as you go around the supermarket.. bagging them in your trolley as you go...

There are dedicated ''checkouts'' for these trolleys.. where some supermarkets have weigh bridges on the floor which weighs the trolley and matches it to the till receipt..others have random checks (similar to Costco), .. against the receipt and the items in the trolley

So it's been soundly determined there's little or no greedy/sneaky mischief that's enabled the unscrupulous to outwit that system?
