Why did the industry drift away from making wholesome TV shows?

I still watch re-runs of Andy Griffith and Leave it to Beaver, I enjoy the humor and the good hearted people. I also watch old movies every week from the 1930's and 1940's.

It doesn't bother me one bit that they don't reflect the darkest realities of life. Why should it? I'm watching to be entertained. If I want reality I'll go to Walmart.
 
Reflecting what was happening in society seems to me the way the shift began. All in the family, Movin on up, Threes company I think are good examples. Then at our age we get to reflect/compare programing that was presented in the late 50's & 60's.

Like once away from nursey rhymes these when looked at are violent.
