Why did you give the names your kids/pets?

No kids, but lots of cats. I gave the names that kind of fit them. And I wanted to give names that sounded very different- Mike, Kitty, Fuzzybuddy.
Why did you give the names to your kids/pets?

One of our dogs I named because she was born on Boxing Day, the other I named because the name just came to me

My children have quite traditional names, but they're not so common today. We chose first names to be different from our own or any family member. I wanted to call our elder daughter ChloƩ , but was overruled by SWMBO.

Most of the animals in my life came with names or got names from my niece or daughter. My first cat I got to name and I went by coat color (except turned out to be the kitten fur color, so not very appropriate after the adult color came in), and my baby horse I named by combining parts of the dam and sire names.

When I took my cat to a new vet (first time since I moved to Maryland), they gave me the microchip number so that I could update his info. I was dumbfounded that on the microchip my current cat's name was Barney. That is not the name my daughter gave him. But also the owner was listed as my mom, so apparently my mother's pet naming technique was to name an animal according to where they were found (we found him living in the barn of the property we bought in Nebraska).

I let my kids name our pets. Our dogs were Mr. Squiggly, Pepsi-Cola, and Rick. The cats were Cinderella (my daughter named that one), Bright, Pugsly, and Grayskull.

My sons have Irish first names. My daughter's is a medieval mid-European name. Their mom had Scandinavian/Viking/Irish roots.

I never had kids but I take pet names seriously. Perhaps because I hate mine so much.

Talia and Juniper from a name your baby book. Juniper is the best kitty name ever! Has 'purr' in it.

Daphne was also from a name your baby book and Chloe I read someplace. I had no idea there is an opera or something related to those names. Chloe will always be my most precious cat.

I name cats / pets after someone or something that means something to me if that makes sense to you. :giggle:

Our daughter was named after a character in an old movie. It's quite a popular name today.

Dogs .. our first lab, chosen by my O/H, at a country barn/shop, was given the nickname "Moe", short for Moses. Our 2nd lab was a rescue named "Max" - we dubbed him Mackie.

Woww, it'd be a long story.
My 1st pet was a dog, called "Youpi", refering to a French series of books for kids, "Caroline and Youpi"
My 1st cat was a Persian, " MeToo", followed by "Nounouche, ", Chana ", "Diva" , "Fanou", and my last cat "Libi", which in Hebrew means "My Heart". After she ....crossed the rainbrow, I thought I couldn't take another cat, but I sort of "foster"* my relatives'pets .(* it means I help them with money when a veterinary treatment is needed). There's a mare "Prestige", a donkey "Simon"- there have been several dogs, and now two, "Nana" and "Ufo".
And cats : Gaspar, Jules, Tofu, Jobig, Siran, Magie, Furby, and "P'tit Loup" (Wolfie ?)

We (or I ;)) named our daughter after the midwife. She basically saved our daughters life. She was two weeks overdue and I went in to be induced, but after the whole day nothing happened and there was no movement so she voiced her concerns to the doctor that I needed an emergency C Section asap.
Never forgotten that lovely midwife. :giggle:

I have a little Poodle.
When I got him, he didn’t really have a name, had come from a kennel, and didn’t listen to anything or even understand that dogs HAD names. I was trying to decide what I wanted to call him, but in the meantime, I just called him ā€œPoodleā€, since he didn’t relate it to himself anyway.
I tested out a few names for him, but nothing seemed to fit, and as he got more accustomed to living with us, he started realizing that the ā€œPoodleā€ word meant him.
Then, I didn’t want to give him a different name since he had actually learned that he had a name and was paying attention when he heard that word. So , for the next few years, his only name was just Poodle.

We have a fenced back yard, and Poodle goes inside and out whenever he wants, but when he gets out the front door, he will run off down the street and go exploring, and we have to chase him down , catch him and carry him back home. Since he loves to go and try to be a World Explorer, I realized that his perfect name was there all the time, and he is now called ā€œMarco Poodleā€.

Our Chihuahua had black around his eyes that looked like a mask, so we named him "Bandito".

When our daughter was born it seemed like every little girl was named either Debby or Lisa. We wanted something different, so we named her Victoria. Mostly she is called Tory.

I had two cats as kittens .The female was a rascal. She was doing something mischievous, and I said, " Aww, you little turkey". And Turkey became her name. The male was Pete. Pete would have scored at the very low end of a cat intelligence chart.

More like what name we avoided with the first cat, a gray tabby…. Sons got her at like age 11-12, so of course they wanted some atrocious name like ā€œMonsterā€ or ā€œLittle Fartā€. I said ā€œ I am not standing on the front stoop at dusk, calling ā€œLittle Fart!ā€ šŸ™„. So she became Princess, which suited her perfectly

Marianne was named after the Jane Austen character (Sense and Sensibility)

Our current cat is a handsome tuxedo cat, so he’s Sylvester šŸ˜‰
