Why Do Books and Movies About The Future Paint It Dark??

Anyone ever read a book or watched a movie about the future that was optimistic? Why is that? The Doomsday Clock does in fact move closer to the end but to me that does no impact the question. Does it relate to the religious nuts throughout history declaring "the end is near". Why the pessimism despite recouping from several horrific wars and plagues, etc.? Perhaps it is in our genes.

It's more likely about money at the box office and book ratings = sales. It's not as "cool" in this day and age to have a happy ending or comedy, family, musical, or romance (sex yes but there's not much in the awards department for romance). As we all know, most awards lean toward drama and action. Those are the ones taken seriously at the box office $$$. Movies must blast those woofer speakers...must be LOUD. Books must be sensational.

The Primary goal of making movies is to Make Money....anything resembling Reality in a movie theater is pretty much wishful thinking...especially with most of today's movies, which seem to be aimed at teenagers.

As for the future, one needs to only take things like Climate Change and Overpopulation into consideration, and visualize the chaos that future generations will certainly face.

Ditto to all the above. Oddly enough happy ever after endings don’t sell unless it’s after some major drama and blood shed. People like action and violence. We watched ‘Oblivion ‘ with Tom Cruise and Morgan Freeman that was a futuristic movie with a happy ending. My husband always says a movie isn’t good unless someone gets shot . Since we don’t get Netflix, we pick out movies at the library . We don’t always go for the big box top sellers. There are some great movies based on true stories that are heart warming and an inspiration to all humanity.
We watched a simple movie the other day called ‘All Saints.’ It was based on a true story of a Pastor whose church was going to get shut down. A group of refugees from Southeast Asia worked together to save each other.
Its a feel good movie .

Today's movies are mostly bad, bad & even worst than bad. Tonight I will start the 1st year of "The Virginian". I also enjoy "Gunsmoke" & "Streets of San Francisco". Kojak is pretty neat too. He is a sharp dresser. Ditto for "Bat Materson". Most of these movies are great to watch & the crooks get their just deserts in the end. I just hat the speed, noise, violence & just plain bad acting in today's movies. Actually, I never watch them. Hey how about "All in the Family" & "The Waltons". They just don't make em like that anymore & never will.

Was the future bright in the second "2001 Space Odyssey" (forget the title).

There was future hope in both movies... 2001 and 2010

2001 ends with the star child [Nietzsche's superman] about to be born.

2010 ends when Jupiter becomes a sun lighting up the distant planets and new life begins on its moon, Europa.

The last message in the movie, 2010:

ALL THESE WORLDS ARE YOURS
– EXCEPT EUROPA
ATTEMPT NO LANDINGS THERE
USE THEM TOGETHER
USE THEM IN PEACE

Ironically, the earth conflict at the time
was between Americans and Russians.

Same as today.
