Why Do People Chemical Spray For Spiders?

Yesterday the neighbor had his entire home sprayed for spiders and ants. Sprayed, the home, deck, flowerbeds all of it and gave me a nasty headache and hard to breathe. I can't help but thinking of environmental damage, not to mention the birds, chipmunks, toads, and small snakes that make the area their home.

This is the second time this year he has had it done because he claims he has an ant problem. He has an ant problem because of his own stupidity in attaching a covered up tarp area on what was once a nice deck, he laid down linoleum and made it part of the house. Does Bozo not realize that ants come up from under the deck.

Your thoughts please, he claims Orkin has a good reputation, I then asked him why twice this year? In 2 years I have had less than 5 spiders in the house, zero ants.
 

We had to have our house sprayed years ago because there were funnel webs under the house. The pest people sprayed everywhere - under the house, on the outside brickwork to the eaves, the lawns and gardens, the timber fences and the cubby house. Everything died - except the funnel webs. They are very tough spiders. The exterminators came back and resprayed under the house with stronger chemicals.

Since that time I refuse to have the pest people in. If I have an ant problem or too many cockroaches I deal with them myself and I leave the house spiders alone. The funnel webs have never returned but no-one ever ventures under the floor boards.

 
When I was in Vietnam, I had only been there for two weeks when one morning I woke up sicker than a dog. At first, my Sgt. thought I was faking and told me to get packed, we have to move on and we were getting picked up in 20 minutes. By the time I was getting on the chopper to go to our new post, I was sweating so bad that I looked like I just got out of the shower fully dressed. I was also paled white, nauseated and cold. The Sgt. asked me again if I was sick and again I told him I was sicker than a dog. He had the medic look at me and I had a high fever, but he said my bp was dangerously high.

We were only on the chopper for about 20 minutes and when we got off, the medic took me to his tent, laid me down and checked me again. He thought I had what we called jungle fever, which means we don’t know what’s wrong with you. An hour later a doctor arrived and told me to strip. The doctor finally says “Here’s the problem. You have been bitten by a giant centipede.” I asked if they were dangerous and he said it is possible to die from them, but not likely. He gave me a couple of shots, some capsules and two days of rest. Even after a couple days of rest, I was really tired. I felt like I wanted to go to bed for a week.

As I tell all household helpers, spiders have the right-of-way inside my house. This is Ohio and the likelihood of finding a poisonous spider is just about nil. Several spiders stayed so long, I gave them names. Webs catch flies, and I hate flies.

Webs stay undisturbed until they get debris-laden and torn. Then I slowly bring them down, giving the spider the chance to relocate. And no, my house is not overrun with the critters. You have to know where to look.
 
I do not like spiders. I can handle just about any snake but spiders give me the willies. I give spiders free roam outside but If I find them inside they are history. I do not use chemicals though. I had a pest control guy tell me that the chemicals they use were safer than the ones purchased at the store. How true that is I do not know.

I agree to an extent, but not when it comes to Fire Ants or Carpenter Ants.

My grandson was afraid of spiders. I picked them up in a cup and put them outside and told him never kill a spider. Spiders are our friends. He's just a little five year old kid but when I went over the next time some adults started talking about the horrors of spiders and he piped up saying spiders are kind. Unbelievable. How the heck did that stick when stuff like, don't climb the ladder, after he falls off, goes in one ear and out the other.
 
In my area ants do show up and many neighbors have the same pest people come multiple times a year ..... repeat visits repeat bill etc

I looked up natural remedies and have not had the continuing issue of those who got suckered into a quarterly plan the pest people really know how to milk it

I agree except when it comes to Fire Ants or Carpenter ants.
 
@Lee Because your neighbor is nuts. When I owned that house, I took the Wolf spiders outside. They are mainly the ones I found inside. They can get big.

I also had ants like crazy when it rained. I just dealt with them. Wiped them up. Put a divergent something on the back of the counter like some jam to keep them occupied and off my other areas. Worked some. No way was I going to spray.

I've also read ants eat termites and I didn't have much termite repair when I sold the bleeping place.
 
We live in "Bug" country. Shortly after moving here, I installed a half dozen ultrasonic bug repellents throughout the house, and they do a good job of keeping the vast majority of bugs out.

Now the only "critters" we seem to get are ladybugs. However, the wife found a "tip" consisting making a bunch of small cloth pouches and filling them with dried coffee grounds. She made several dozen, and spotted them on the window sills, and this year we've had virtually NO ladybugs....or any other bugs.
 
Don, ladybugs are good in the garden but I do not want them in the house. Your wife has obviously found a good way to control bugs (y)

I put vinegar on the door sills, never had a problem with ants.
 
im so pathetic at this point ive been scooping the damn ants up and tossing them outside vs whacking them.
did same with a water spider.

now if i lived in Fla or some real buggy place as i did in college...yah we had chem spray in Every Month to off
the roaches.
it is their world however. we just put houses on it.
 
I don't have a spider problem, I gave a geico problem. They solve the spider problem and they are cute. LOL Every once in a while I get a geico in the house. They are so fast I can't catch them. My son or grandson gets them sooner or later and they go back to the great outdoors.

I try not to use chemicals. Growing up we had frogs, a lot of frogs. I can't remember the last time I saw a frog. Oh yeah, I remember now. I was doing laundry and found a baby frog in my son's jean pocket. LOL He was about 5 so that would be 29 years ago.

No, no, no, I don't agree with that.
I just put a little sign at the bottom of my doors..... "You have been warned, spiders get crushed underfoot in this house, so go and scoff your little buggers elsewhere."
Spiderman doesn't talk to me anymore. 😊

Very true. When we had funnelwebs under the house we found one outside one morning and as it was very quiet I managed to get it inside a jar and took it to school to have the science mistress look at it. She explained that it was a male funnelweb. In the Autumn they leave their burrows and go looking for females. If they are caught outside when the sun comes up they find some cool shelter which could be in a shoe or under some dirty washing on the laundry floor. This was when some people got bitten. I remember one young woman died when she gathered up the laundry in her arms and the spider bit her on the chest. The males are smaller but more venomous than the females.

Having heard all of this I was very uneasy about the spiders under the house. They are big spiders and I wondered about them coming out en masse looking for something to eat. At that time we only had a backyard privy and I was very nervous if I wanted to relieve myself during the night. The laundry was outside too and I was extremely careful handling the dirty clothes.

After the spiders were eradicated I found out what they were eating. I never saw a cockroach until they were gone. Now I have to lay down baits to keep them under control.
