Why do they hate Baby Boomers?

Old Dummy

Who am I? Why am I here?
This is something that has really angered me: Young people online commenting about how much they despise Baby Boomers. I just ran across another really nasty comment on a site and that prompted me to make this thread. I've been wondering where I could vent about this for a few years, but of course, where better than SeniorForums? The light just went on a few minutes ago!

I've been noticing this problem for a few years now and I don't know why it is happening, but the ignorant comments really anger me. They think "we" screwed the world up I guess, without any real knowledge about it. I've been working all my life; I'll be 69 this summer and am still working. I've never taken one penny of unemployment or other handouts. I've lived below my means and invested the difference. This somehow screwed the world up for THEM?

They are being fed this by something/somebody. The comment I read a few minutes ago was really filled with hatred. There is no rational way of responding to that. A few years ago when this first started I tried to respond (rationally) but there is no getting through. They've been indoctrinated with this belief.

Comments?

I agree with them. I don't like my fellow boomers. You apparently believe that the world is not 'screwed up' because you saved and invested? We saved and invested and retired early and enjoy all the benefits of retirement. But the world is a dangerous place, we have crumbling infrastructure, more wars in the world than ever in history, gun violence, poor health care, a huge separation of haves and have nots, pollution (air, water, plastic everywhere), a continuously diminishing standard of living, and a host of other problems. And, we are the "Woodstock generation'.
Am I wrong?

I had nothing to do with any of that.

Nobody is to blame
It’s a natural process of supply and demand
Baby Boomers just happen to be in a time slot of that process

Look at history
200 year cycles are rather common, no matter how many kids people had

It’s been China’s turn to boom, of late
But other countries will be next

It’s just the way it is

As far as those that point and blame?
Just tell ‘em yes, you do want fries

Correct! We weren't asked when we wanted to be born. We didn't deliberately choose to grow up in that particular culture. To us 'Boomers' the world was totally real to us and we went along with it. We worked, we saved, we invested in out future and when we retired, we hoped to have a few comfortable years before we shuffled off. That was the way it was and if the ones who are complaining about it today were born in the 'Boomer generation', they would have done the same. Instead they seem to expect everything to be handed to them on a plate.

WOW, I think Old Dummy made this thread in hopes of others defending how he feels about the ridicule Baby Boomers get from previous generations.........but, so far, they sure hasn't happened!

We were the generation of change. We were going to rip out the bad and replace it with the good. Well, we didn't do everything we could. We became the establishment. So, it's only natural that we are blamed for all of life's failings. It''s the same way we blamed the generation before us. Of course, all this belongs in the "Talk Is Cheap" Dept. of some blog. Who cares what some self appointed generational blogger types on his little keyboard?

It's because today's "have it all children" are not taught history. They don't believe that what happened in WWII really happened. They don't believe the world population of "baby boomers", are a result of the losses occurred in WWII. Us baby bommers had it great in comparison to our parents. Then when baby boomers' children became parents they "spared" their children all the hardship they could.

Now the third generation children wrap their children in cotton wool. This fourth generation of well off people are nearly useless. Overprotected, lack of responsibility, the "me" generation who have to blame the grandparents because they can't blame themselves. Their parents raised them to be perfect, therefore they can do no wrong.

There will always be wars, inequality, blame, and madness. However, the children of the working "class", and the poor understand the ways of the world better than the others. They simply do not have as loud a voice. These children are too busy making ends meet and taking responsibility for their lives to engage in such stupidity, IMO.

Now, my feelings...….many of us were, and some still are, very dedicated to their jobs, whereas the younger generation definitely not nearly as much. They want the big bucks, even without a college degree. They want to make their own working hours, call in sick many times (and their not sick) and then they get totally surprised when their supervisor tells them they have no more PTO left. And, during working hours, they want to do numerous things, mainly on the internet, that isn't work related at all.

But, then again, we want to blame them for of the drug use today, completely forgetting about our old Woodstock days and how much mj, cocaine, heroin and pills were used back then by some Baby Boomers.

IOW, we have beefs with them and they have beefs with us. Typical society, I think.:D

You know what.... the world today is full of hatred. If it is not about this it is about something else. We hear and see some sort of hateful type of news every night on our local television news station. This can stem from religion, to color, to politics, to even generations. It is pretty much sadly how the world handles many issues today with hate and violence. One main reason why I believe it has gotten so bad in recent years is the use of Social Media. People now use that platform to spew hate and argue and it has even caused many lives to be lost in the process. Also the outlet of Social Media is you get this piece of information whatever it may be in a blink of a eye and it starts debates and arguments. The addition of live video feeds on Social Media has also added fuel to the fire as well to all of this. So the problem really isn't particularly one thing at all it is that the world is quickly turning into a place where people find ways to hate if they don't see eye to eye with the ways they are exactly thinking things should be done.

Well, I don't know which generation was perfect or horrible? Or if there ever was one?

If a person is not looking after themselves, in all ways....it is always convenient to point the finger of blame toward someone else . Or a group of someone else's. When [whatever] is coming up short in their life. It is far easier than saying .....well damn, I failed/came-up short in that area. Which is WHY they came up short in that area in the first place.....looking for the easier.

I have a friend , in her late 50's, who always complains about how much $$ her boss makes, and how much more she [my friend] should be making. But she never wants to talk about what she spends.

As for 'global' problems ?.......are they all the fault of "baby-boomers" ? No!.....And again, has the globe in all facets ever been perfect? Not from what i remember reading in history, and not from the history I remember directly ..........jmo

As for me, I love some of the "Oldies" songs and definitely Classic Rock (Styx, Boston, Heart, Van Halen, AC/DC and so on) and absolutely can't stand the really hard-rocking music of today. I thought we had some Heavy Metal music years ago, but the rock music of today...…..

IOW, today's generation can keep their music, because I sure don't like it!

But are you going to spew hate all over the place about the kind of music they listen to and make fun of them because they listen to that sort of music? I highly doubt it. I don't like Rap music at all, but I am not going to waste my time going around making fun of anyone who listening to it. Heck, when my Grand Daughters get a little older they will probably listen to some of it (God Forbid). :)

IMO, if ya want to be a mover & shaker in the business world...great... but leave your family & family business at home.

Again opinion, but this is just fuel for the fire, of the breakdown of the family unit in America.

I still believe that ..........Dad at work making the money , Mom at home making super , and the kids in the backyard chasing the dog........is the best way.

I didn't get it, at either end. When i was a kid, that was my parents fault , as an adult, that fault is mine.

I don't have any solutions or answers, but the millennials live in an artificial world of virtual reality. They have to be online every 5 minutes or they cease to exist. They have no clue what it is like to protest a war daily until it ends or to fight for civil rights and women's rights. They probably can't even spell without spellcheck. I don't care if they hate me and my generation. If computers and the internet were wiped out tomorrow, I'd survive and they wouldn't. There's the difference. Just IMO and no offense to anyone.

Agree wholeheartedly with your post Chic.. and the line in bold is the truth hit squarely on the head!!!

Different generations will always have different perspectives. The younger generation has the advantages of technology and hindsight/history. The older generation has actual experience and a more detailed history of things. Different eras have/had different priorities. I see both.

I see middle aged gray hair adult who constantly scam, manipulate, con for money complain how lazy millennials are. I see a lot of brain donors no matter what age. The biggest thing I see is a shorter and shorter attention span and ability to handle, manage or pay attention to details which leads to being uninformed or inexperienced.

The Who sang about their generation 50 years ago. There will always be a generational divide now a days.

This is dedicated to all the old curmudgeons that have nothing better to do than bash the younger generation.

Aneeda is correct. We should be seriously worried about the future of this world because of the way todays young people are being raised. There is a culture of self-pity and blame, plus the obsession with the world of 'celebs' is having a bad effect. Too many parents think they are not responsible for their own children. How many parents these days actually interact with their children? Too many use the internet and television as baby-sitters. It makes you wonder why people bother to have kids. Crime is on the increase because the young are not being disciplined. Juvenile nuisance is on the rise, because children are allowed to do as they please. By the time they have reached the age when they can be prosecuted, crime has become a way of life for them. And the government wonders why the prisons are over-flowing!

Well, as far as the high-tech computer age goes, I'd really, really miss it if it weren't there. Computers made my job, in Purchasing and Inventory Management a whole lot easier. Instead of typing out a purchase order on a typewriter, I had Accounting software to use. Same with Inventory Management. No more doing inventory on 3 x 5 cards.

I think that each generation takes its licks and gives them to the generation ahead of them and to the one behind them.

When I begin to worry about the next generation I try to think of young people like some of the member's grandchildren that I see on SF, they give me hope.

I have confidence that they will do what needs to be done even if I disagree with the way that they choose to do it.
