Why do we become Indecisive?

I am a pendulum when it comes to making decisions. I think my mind is made up one way then the pendulum swings the other way.

Flipping a coin is my usual decision making in the end.

I am getting that way because when I want to buy something expensive, it takes me days to make a decision. I almost bought myself a new car just before I became ill. I thought about the deal for 2 weeks and then I became ill, so the illness made my decision for me, otherwise, I still don’t know what my final outcome would have been.

Well, the silver lining is that you saved yourself some serious money.

I don't know about all those fancy studies, I know what I have to do. I just can't get off my butt.
The way I deal with fancy (or otherwise) studies is simply "take what you need and leave the rest". When I read about the paradox of choice, I realize that this does apply to me. As a result of becoming aware of it, I am able to make choices and move on without looking back to second-guess myself. If I see a study on why we should quit smoking, I just move on because I don't smoke. However, becoming aware of how other people's smoke can adversely affect me is something worth considering.

In short, there is a lot of information available to us and we can simply filter out what we don't need and/or that we know to be untrue, and learn from the information that is useful.

Become indecisive ?.......I’ve alwAys been indecisive and getting worse 🙄🥴
Looks like you are in the majority :):

"56 percent"

"In general, 56 percent of people consider themselves to be indecisive. But among those who enjoy seeking more than hiding when playing hide-and-seek, only 35 percent consider themselves to be indecisive. Based on a survey of 73 people who enjoy seeking more than hiding when playing hide-and-seek and 321 people total."

Or, not to depress you or anything, you could be suffering from this complaint, ("Latin word" warning):

"Aboulomania is a mental disorder in which the patient displays pathological indecisiveness. It is typically associated with anxiety, stress, depression, and mental anguish, and can severely affect one's ability to function socially. Although many people suffer from indecision, it is rarely to the extent of .......,"

When you are young, you know that you can do anything
without thinking or any training, but as you get older, we
get more wary about what might go wrong, at least I have
started to be like this.

Why?

I always said that if your dreams don't frighten you, then
you are not ambitious enough and I lived most of my life
to that belief, yet now I find that I am hesitant, but then
I am out of new ambitions at the moment.

Do any of you find life similar to this?

Mike.
Mike,
I've always been indecisive.
I am in awe of decisive men.
and now, my motto is: You should always do the thing you are most afraid to do.

I'm having problems making decisions. Not mundane things like what to have for breakfast, but more like "Should I buy another house, or fix up the one I have a continue to live there?" Then I get in the contractor conundrum - which one will give me the best deal. It seems like when I get estimates for the same job, they all say something different or include things others don't, so there's no way to compare between them.

Yes - kind of a "right or wrong,, but I'm probably right" way.

For me it's more that I get all the info I can and then decide based on what feels right. If I'm not sure and it means I'm not ready to make a decision and if I don't have to make a decision I wait until either one decision feels right or when I do have to make a decision. Usually something feels right before a decision needs to be made.

I think I am decisive for small matters (unless it is actually impatience+lack of concern instead of decisiveness), but with big things that involve money and risk (i.e., when to retire, whether to rent out my house or use a house sitter, whether to sell the house or hope that it increases in value enough to offset all the things that will need to be replaced in the next 0-10 years, do I want to continue alone out in the pleasant countryside after I retire, or do I want to move to an apartment in a high rise in an vibrant city with places to go and people to meet, etc) I am just a mess of indecision.

I'm trying to decide on what office chair to get my wife for her birthday. It used to be, you went to an office supply store or furniture store and there were maybe two chairs that met your criteria, so you picked one, brought it home, and usually, you weren't satisfied with it, but you lived with it because that's all there was. Now we have 100 or more to choose from on Amazon! And why the !@#$% does anyone need a headrest on a desk chair? Or a footrest?

I need to make a decision tomorrow for it to get here on time.

I think society is programming people to be indecisive ........
they can sell you advice and insurance etc ., up-sell you at restaurants and retail ...........based on if you are unsure of your decisions.

Look around .....the ads always want you to feel if you just check one more site ....one more thing..... to make SURE you get the BEST deal........if you would only sign up and jump through this hoop then it will happen.

It can't be the best deal if there is NO bad deals ..... yet apps tell us we will never overpay etc.
Big decisions always have risk ...... but some want zero risk ........ no matter the research on items.... something can change on a dime..... many are paralyzed by what if's .......

I make decisions on the best data without digging to deep and often rely on a gut feeling if it does not feel right.
Sure some may not have been the very best move but so far I have avoided huge errors.

the only time I was majorly indecisive was when I was trying to pick out which Harley to buy.

Bought the red one.
