We take clapping for granted, but why exactly do we clap? And when did clapping start?

Why do we clap? Well mainly because, if at any event, it would be impolite I'm thinkin' to yell approval. I could just see, as Gary pointed out, the first person to try it MUST have looked strange. If it was long, long ago...Thinking cave dweller times, It probably started out as a mistake. After Thor the Hunter brought the evening meal home everyone would yell their approval while Bruce, the resident fire starter...not wanting to yell anymore.... tried hitting his hands together. The others noticed this and followed suit....The rhythm of clapping was so intoxicating that this became part of their culture.....
