Why do we have pets?

I'm a cat person. Others are dog people. Why do we drag animals into our homes? I was wonder about that at 5AM this morning, as I was cleaning up cat droppings in the bathroom and way down the hall. Really, am I that starved for affection that I put up with finding kitty litter in everything I own? Dog people put up with similar gripes. I'm not sure what the answer is. Affection-yeah. That's part of it. There's got to be something more. Why do pets turn a house into a home?

Maybe that need in us to be needed? And recipients of the unconditional love we get from them? That coupled with being the gluttons for punishment we are for putting up with them . LOL

I think that Marie said it best. My Dino gives me great pleasure and also drives me nuts.

He barks to be let out, so he can bark to be let back in. Sometimes NOT so funny.

Falcon, I can relate. I once had a cat who would sit outside a closed bedroom door begging to be let in. So, door opened, cat takes two steps inside the bedroom, looked around and walks back out.

I'm a cat person also. I know I have her because it's not near as lonely with her here as it is without her. She is just a lot of company but, she is pushing 17 years old so that may not last long.

I've only had cats, and I know exactly why I have them. Every one has been an abandoned cat that just showed up around my house.

I feel sorry for them, and if they have a good temperament, I take them in, but only one at a time. I tried having two cats once and it didn't work out too well. Maybe just a fluke.

Indoor cats are so easy to take care of, as long as you don't travel. I think our personalities just click. I don't try to make a cat do what it doesn't want to do, and most reciprocate by not doing anything it shouldn't do. When one crawls up on your lap it's a good feeling, because you know you have earned its trust.

When this cat is gone, I won't actively try to find another one, but one will come...eventually.

I have had cats and dogs my whole life. They are nonjudgmental and give unconditional love. I can remember coming home from school after a particularly bad day for a reason I can't remember now, but I do remember crying into my dogs fur until it was wet with tears. I also remember the sense of love, relief and peace I felt after having done that. Nothing better than a pet to relieve stress.

 My cat plays me like that all the time Marie! He sits by the back door looking like he wants to go out, puts two paws on the porch, turns around and heads back into the house. Five minutes later he might to that and actually go out.....or not. But he plays me like a fiddle and I love him dearly.

I have a dog and a cat and I love both. I think that animal lovers just want to have a pet around that they can care for and give a good life to, maybe pamper a bit. Of course they're company too, I'd never want to live alone without a dog or a cat. My kiddos are my family, they go wherever they want to in the house and my husband loves them just as much as I do.

There are always clean up jobs we have to do for them. Just a couple of hours ago my pup upchucked some clear liquid stuff that landed mostly on the kitchen floor, but some went on the carpet in the living room. I rushed him into the yard in case there was more, and cleaned the floor and rug while he was out. I keep my cat litter box in a shower in the basement, so that helps control the litter tracking. I have a covered box too. By the time he makes it upstairs, he's pretty much litter free till next time. :p

All I know is that if I lived in the wilderness all alone, I certainly would have a pet for company and they are great watchdogs as well.

I saw a movie once. Rock Hudson, living alone. He went bonkers.

My wife and I both love pets. I've had a dog all my life. She has too.
We have a dog, 2 inside cats, 2 or 3 outside cats, 2 birds (one is a parrot that doesn't like men), opossums that come at night, along with raccoons, even a skunk that lives under the utility bldg. Deer come by now and then. I love my animal companions. Life wouldn't be the same without them. I've never been a hunter, because I don't have the heart to shoot anything, not even chipmunk.

exwisehe ~ you are a real animal lover for sure. :) Bet you have bird feeders in your yard, too. Too bad the parrot doesn't like you.
