Why does outrage attract our attention?

As you know cable opinion programs that parade as news make big $$ manipulating the audience and invoking outrage.

Outrage assures us of our moral superiority: “My disapproval proves how distant I am from what I condemn.” Whether it is a mother who neglects her child or a dictator who murders opponents, or a celebrity who is revealed as a sexual predator, that person and that behavior have no similarity to anything I am or do. My outrage cleans me from association.”

Big money, influencing people's view, influencing their choice of leadership, very powerful stuff. Where does it end? Is objectivity dead?

There is little wonder why the world population is suffering from a measurable increase in depression and anxiety rates.

Does the 'bubble' have to burst, or can we step back?

I think there is a need for seeing justice. I just watched an episode of Unsolved Mysteries where a young mother was falsely imprisoned when her baby's inherited condition produced ethylene glycol and so the mother was convicted of poisoning her baby. But then, even after it was medically shown that this was the case that the genetic condition created the ethylene glycol, the prosecutors were able to prevent this medical evidence from being used and she was convicted. It was only after this was aired on Unsolved Mysteries and many doctors contacted the prosecutors to demand her release was she then released (to save face I would assume). This miscarriage of justice had me so angry! There were no consequences for the prosecutors, as there never is regardless of their misconduct. The woman did, however, win a suit against Social Services for taking away her children.

Too often, however, there is a rush to justice. As was the case here.

I remember that episode. and to think the mother might have been executed for a 'murder' that never happened.

I saw that episode as well. "There were no consequences for the prosecutors"...that is an outrage that is repeated more times than the public will ever know. However, this type of outrage is in reaction to actual events, and not in the same category as the invented outrage that the beginning post was alluding to.

In my immediate area, stepping back is no longer an option. Many have already gone over the cliff due to past political lies and propaganda. The lemmings will do their thing as long as they continue to defy logic and common sense
Yes, am seeing the same type of folly in this small desert town. Fear, Uncertainty & Doubt continue to be attractive and profitable for media.

Outrageous comments in any sort of national as well as social media will attract attention (gotcha! Made you look) and then it might get a 'click' and then a site with ads might get a penny. All are money driven and we all play along because we are bored. It's a harmless way for a few to accumulate wealth but provides fertile grounds for conspiracy theorists to spread their brand of 'truth'.
