Why I'm Here

One year ago, I lived happily in a large townhouse in Reston VA with a wife and two cats. The wife is gone, the cats have given for care to two loving persons (and both cats are flourishing), and I am selling my house. For the past four months, I have been adjusting to life in a senior living community (my first) during a significant pandemic (my first), and (surprise, surprise) I am NOT flourishing. For a variety of reasons, I feel that I need to move to a different community in a different part of the country. So I'm looking for desirable senior communities (independent living) in desirable parts of the country. All suggestions welcome.

Hi and Welcome to the group! We are newly retired and have moved to the Northeast. We have a house, for now, but have been (before Covid-19) actively looking for the ultimate Retirement Community. We've signed up for one open house and have taken several tours. I really recommend the tours - and, take questions with you!! You can look online but few of them offer any pricing to the public. (my biggest complaint since I hate to waste anyone's time - especially ours!) They want you to visit - kind of like time share - but just tell them you're shopping right now, smile and leave. However - they all have wait lists and deposits. Some of these places have waiting lists up to 8 years!

Another thought, is that my father lived, for 13 years, in an Erickson Community. They have 20 communities around the country. My father loved it and we were ALWAYS impressed when we went to visit. We recommended Erickson to my older brother-in-law and his wife. They finally took the tour in Palm Beach, FL and called that night. They put their names on the wait list that day!! We don't have one close to us here but we use them as the "gold standard." They also seem to be reasonably priced.

I hope you find one you like!

Hi Pnogem and Welcome to the forum. I live in what is known as a "best kept secret" and you need a password to get in....just kidding.

You could try to find a place with mostly a senior population and a few younger families just to keep things interesting. Mobile home communities are a good choice.

Welcome to the site.
I think you need to ask yourself why you are not flourishing in your present situation. What exactly is the problem? After having your own house, and a wife at your side, it's bound to be difficult to adjust to a new environment. So, before you think about moving, just sort out what is wrong and what you really want.

Hi Pnogem welcome glad you found us

Best of luck to you in making those decisions. SF is a great place to spend time, to make friendships, a lot of caring, learning and support here. Make yourself at home.

I happen to live in a Senior living facility, but not know what part of the country you are from I can't give you any details. Right now, these facilities are being closely monitored during this pandemic and residents don't feel much like they are flourishing. We should see a peak about the middle of the month and things should change for the better.

If you can tolerate a couple of months of hot (never more than mid-90s) and humid weather, south central Florida is great. I have garden plants over a year old, in pots - outside, that have fruited continually since I brought the blooming plants home.

Resales of 2-BR mobile homes in a 55+ well maintained mobile home park in a quiet, safe rural area will start at around $25,000. Houses are owned individually, lot is rented.

Since I don't know really what might interest you, will tell you this:

Wife and I met/married in So. California and a year later moved to Colorado (Front Range). Lived south of Denver for 5 1/2 years, before moving to NC for a year. Then, moved to northeastern Florida, aka Jacksonville, for 10 1/2 years. Ended up missing Colorado a whole lot, and returned last year (2019).

Florida has it's share of Seniors, but it can be amazing how many Seniors live here in northern Colorado, even with the winters here. Most Seniors here don't think very highly of Florida or the South.
