Why people laugh less these days

People laugh less frequently and differently today due to increased screen time, digital communication replacing face-to-face interaction, and higher stress levels, which reduce spontaneous, shared moments. Technology reduces nonverbal cues like facial expressions necessary for genuine laughter. Additionally, younger generations report increased anxiety, affecting overall laughter frequency.

Key Factors Affecting Laughter Today:

Reduced Physical Interaction: Digital communication (texting, social media) lacks the nuances of face-to-face interaction, which often limits the contagious nature of genuine laughter.
Technology & Screen Time: Passive technology use can lead to isolation and lower engagement, impacting positive emotional responses. People are spending less time in situations where spontaneous, shared laughter occurs.
Increased Stress and Mental Health: High stress, anxiety, and concerns over world issues reduce the likelihood of laughing, particularly for younger age groups.
Aging and Life Changes: Laughter often decreases with age, as adults have fewer opportunities for playful, spontaneous interaction compared to children.
The Loss of "Genuine" Laughter: Studies indicate a decline in spontaneous, involuntary laughter (associated with deep amusement) in favor of more polite or forced laughter in social settings.

The shift away from in-person interaction has reduced the "social glue" of laughter, replacing it with digital engagement.

Especially the above.

A great big belly-aching laugh that just keeps going and going can feel so good. I get one sometimes from a really funny movie, but I think it's so much better when shared with someone than when alone.

In a nutshell ? Our government, the world and society in general sucks;)
It's not that hard to laugh more, just turn off the news, don't push your news reports on the web, quit changing every thread into world, war and political comments and enjoy the people we have here. There is still so much in life than that. Limit yourself for times to be World Updated.

Sounds a bit off to me... can you cite a credible source for that?

Cultural norm shifts. I used to really like TV sit-coms when I was a kid. Now watching in re-runs, they just seem inane and pointless. If I laugh at something when with other people, they look at me like I am crazy. I can't remember a funeral I've attended where anyone was overtly crying or showing signs of mourning. Don't show any emotion. We are becoming a society of Mr. Spocks.

My Wife and I are watching the series Mister Mecedes, which is based on a Stephen King novel of the same name. It's a 3 season long epic. I have the tv set up to show the dialog on the lower part of the screen, to accommodate for my poor hearing. I find myself saying what I think the next line of dialogue will be before the actor actually says it. Wife thinks I am nuts...I am simply projecting what I think the character WILL say based on my past experience as an investigator. This is on net flicks and it really draws my interest. And some of the characters are funny as hell, too. JIMB>

I suppose that's from a study. I wonder how it was conducted, where, and how many participants were involved.

the whole thing smacks of AI opinion and not a credible study.

I fed the entire OP into ChatGPT and I got this back:

"I’ve looked closely at the passage you quoted. It does not appear to come from a specific published source or peer-reviewed study. Instead, it reads like a synthesized summary or commentary on research in psychology, social science, and digital media effects—essentially a combination of known findings, but phrased in a way that is not a direct quotation from any single article or book. Some points in the passage do align with documented research." [More. . . ]
