Why search for extraterrestial life?

I can hardly watch an astronomy TV documentary where the subject of life on other planets or solar systems is brought up. Astrophysicists get excited if they think they find evidence of water or oxygen there and say it could be a sign of life. You know, even if there is intelligent life elsewhere, they might not be as friendly as we are, or carry diseases we have no resistance to! Why are we so eager to find other beings?

re:Why are we so eager to find other beings?

The U.S. government got billion and billions of $$$$$$$$ and they have nothing better to spend it on something the nobody knows even exist.
IMO....there is nothing up there until one lands on this planet and if they know any better then they would stay away from this dying planet with all of it diseases.

Over many years,we have confused movies and TV with reality. Science fiction has turned into fictional science.

[h=2]Why not the search for extraterrestial life?Like Columbus, Pizzaro, Cortez, Magellan, Captain Cook et al, man will continue to explore this earth and the heavens in search of life.[/h]

I would rather see our tax money spent on search for ET life...SO MUCH MORE SO than the billions and billions we spend on War, killing people and destroying then possessing resources...in the name of fighting terrorism... Even though it may seem 'impractical', to me, it represents man's search for something he is really searching for...something bigger that makes him dream and aspire to great and wondrous things.

I always wondered, if intelligent life is found on another
planet, how will we humans be able to communicate with
them?

We have been on this earth for a very long time, yet we
can only converse with another human if we both know
a common language.

We cannot converse with dogs, cats, horses, or indeed
with any of this earths other inhabitants, many species
that are more numerous than we humans.

Mike.
