Why the fuss over "Royals"?

Some nations still have vestiges of the Age Of Kings, by having some sort of royalty. My ex is a "Royalty Nut". She acts like she knows these people intimately, as though she just got off the phone with them. She has friends, who chatter away about the "Royals". I understand that you won't find "Royals" shopping for diapers @ 3:15 AM, at Walmart. So, they have a different life style, but I think they were conceived like the rest of us. I guess I'm puzzled by the interest of some in "Royals".

I have friends who chatter away about footballers. Each to their own.

For all my carping about them I'm with Hollyd on this one.

I hope that when I'm 93 I'll be able to host a major, perhaps the major, state visit, play a major role in D Day commemorations and spend a couple of hours on a parade ground all in the same week!

I'm not interested in Royals either, being born in MA, the cradle of liberty and American rebellion. I never got it. These people, (royals), contribute nothing to society. The are just powerless figureheads of constitutional monarchies because it saved them from being overthrown and executed. Civilization doesn't need royalty; they are a huge expense and often an embarrassment. Just IMHO. I have no interest whatsoever in what any of them do.

I am somewhat interested in them, but mostly for the wrong reasons. I get a laugh over their sense of self importance, but then, I enjoy their weddings.

However, I do like the Queen. Her husband was unfaithful to her, her children caused some scandals and she still held her head high.

The Royal family are part of our British heritage. There are too many people who are trying to destroy our history and traditions, regarding them as 'irrelevant in the modern world'. These people have no sense of identity and culture. I don't approve of Prince Harry's choice of bride, I think it shows his contempt for his royal status and the obligations that go with it. Hopefully, other Royals will have a stronger sense of duty and choose their partners more carefully.

I've never been much interested in Royal doings, although they do put on hella weddings. LOL! But I don't care about Hollywood gossip either, or neighborhood gossip for that matter.

I don't see it as a lifestyle I see it as a lifelong duty and commitment to the people.

The Royals could just as easily live a jet-set lifestyle without any thought of service to anyone but themselves.

In many ways, it must be a terrible burden to be born into or marry into the British royal family.

I enjoy hearing about them especially the younger ones. They are Royals but seem to have added a more average dimension to their lifestyle besides carrying out their duties as Royals. If the British people look up to them and it is part of their heritage,so be it. It's not hurting me in anyway.

I enjoyed it more when Diana was in the picture. She brought so much life to the Royals. Also I found the Monaco Royals, Prince Rainier, Grace Kelly and their family very interesting over the years.

I have mixed feelings about the British royal family. I admire Queen Elizabeth. She takes her role seriously and has done an excellent job. On the other hand, hereditary privilege and rule are long out of date. But, they don’t really rule, do they. Isn't it really a form of show business? The pageantry and costumes are there for entertainment value. And, they are costumes.

I feel a bit sorry for them. Sure, they have job security, but at the cost of little privacy. And, they are doomed to a life of dull ceremonies that they would probably just as soon skip. Princes Edward and Harry and their wives are lovely couples, but there are many lovely couples in Britain who don’t have their lives so closely monitored.

I know that there are many in Great Britain and the Commonwealth who would like to dump the royal family. But, I hope they don’t. They are a link to history, they boost morale, and they do put on a good show.

As for why so many follow their every move, who knows? Why do some people follow the Kardashians? Maybe it’s like a soap opera and they want to see what happens next. Personally, if I met one of them on the street, I’d say howdy and leave them alone. I’d do the same for any celebrity.

If I have offended any loyal British subjects, I apologize. I respect your views.

Hear! Hear! Chic. I wholeheartedly agree. THIS is why I am ensconced out here in one of the former colonies never to return, mostly on account of the overall obsession with the Monarchy...(English born and raised for the first 21 years of my life...) Come on...!! Let`s at least get things in the right perspective, and focus on a completely new direction for the British Isles...!!

But most of the second largest of the British Isles, Ireland, doesn't acknowledge the Queen!

For someone brought up in the UK you don't seem very familiar with it's geography!

I’m mildly interested in the royals mainly because they carry a tradition . It may not be a tradition I understand, but it’s still a tradition.

I’m with Bonnie here in that Diana held the most interest for me also. She changed the entire venue when she was in the picture. She had a purpose; a mission and in my opinion I think she carried it out with both class and determination leaving a admirable legacy.

Yes, to make sure Diana was always the centre of attention and that she always appeared in the best light, a legacy which still exists as this post shows.
